Notary Services for the Legally Bling
Good afternoon all, I have been requested to notarize documents (not sure what they are as of yet) for somone that is legally blind. Are there any additional procedures that I need to be aware of vs someone that is not blind?

I had a closing for someone who was legally blind. When I first arrived, I made sure to inquire if that if there were any questions/issues with any of the information they were given. I was assured that all of the questions were answered. Fortunately, the BO's son lived there and was in the same room with us with the BO's permission. The son had a POA in the event that it would be needed. Even though the BO was legally blind, as long as I placed the BO's hand on the line that needed to be signed, the BO signed it with no problem at all. If there were any questions, the son then called the LO.
It took a few more minutes than usual, and the BO was grateful that I took extra time and caution.
Just because they are legally blind doesn't mean that they can't see anything. Some things they can, other's they can't.

Just did one last month. The borrower told me that the lender agreed to have him initial each page rather than sign - and they said they were ok with that. I checked with title and it was agreed that he could initial instead of sign and the initials would be considered "his mark". In order to sign by a mark two witnesses were also required to sign and I was a witness and the borrower's daughter was the 2nd witness. The wife also signed and the blind borrower was told by his wife and daughter what the documents said. It took about 2x the time. Blind people's social security checks are just as good as anyone else's money when it comes to paying a mortgage payment.

Nicely said. I found a really cool pen for my
arthritic (sp?) signers - real stress-relievers as packages can be so large... http://www.penagain.com/
Every little bit helps.
Several sight-impaired folks have used a cut-out signature 'box' - line it up with the sig line, and voila - works great.

The one I did a few years ago, the wife was legally blind and had no ID. She had to go get one. Her husband and I took turns reading some portions to herper her request. This, by the way, was the signing FOX never paid me for. It took 2 hours.
