Do Notaries Need To Be Issued Special ID?

Lastest from our beloved....

"Because of their position of trust, Notaries are being called upon to handle society’s most sensitive transactions, such as verifying a person’s identity. This level of responsibility has led to a call for issuing Notaries special ID by state governments in order to assure signers the Notary is reputable and commissioned.
...Write to us at guess who?.org and tell us what you think"

Oh puleeez...... I find that signers trust me because I am a notary. I have never been questioned by a signer about my integrity. In fact, I am amazed at the signers who take out their wallet and leave it on the table as they go into another room to make a copy of their ID. Talk about trust!

Honestly? You know I'm very vocal about my feelings

about dot org....but I really wish our SOS would issue a credit-card size ID card when we're commissioned...I'd even pay extra for it - I'd like it to contain our name, commission no., date of expiration AND the signature of the SOS...and maybe a little note of "notary in good standing"....

But that's just me..

We get a "pocket card" here in NY

No photo on it, but it does contain name, commission #, commission start and end date, and county of registration. It's issued by the Dept of State, and says "This is to certify that the bearer is a duly sworn and commissioned Notary Public for the term shown as a constitutional officer of the State of New York"

I've never been asked to produce it...

AR has wallet card also.

A certain national organization ought to mind its own business and stop sticking their money-sniffing noses into state's business. Fat chance, right?

Ain't gonna happen any time soon, Lee....

I wouldn't mind a pciture ID, with relevant notary info. Sometimes companies request a copy of my drivers license and notary commission, maybe a special ID would be able to handle both. I would prefer it come from my Secretary of State for a fee, not xyz company.

And "xyz" would probably make you join their organization to get one at an outrageous fee and of course, it would be sold as "the" only acceptable Notary ID for all SS, TC's etc. just like their BGC.

More BS from that crazy California organization. Let me guess, they will charge $100 bucks for the ID & you'll need to renew every 2 years!!!! $&%^#$

Not quite, Marilynn.....

You'll have to join, be certified, have BGC and THEN they'll issue you your state-specific ID card...all for the low low price of $XXX.XX - and it's only good for two years - then you're not you any more!!

I say absolutely. I have been asked by clients more than once if they could see a copy of my credentials (particularly for weddings; they want to make sure their wedding will be legit). I have a ridiculously cheap looking card from my bonding company, but that's about it.

When I became a Commissioner of Deeds, I got a beautiful commission certificate, with a gold raised state seal, and the original signature of the governor. It also came with a wallet sized commission card. I don't understand why notaries can't be offered the same luxury.

Good point, Robert. I have a business card that I provide to every client, carry a copy of my Commission, etc. I can understand the issue being raised for weddings--they will certainly want to know if the marriage will be valid.

I also would like to see a state-issued id card with photo and commission info on it. But until that time comes, if ever, I just do with my business card (with disclaimer printed on the back), and I scanned and shrunk my commission certificate into a wallet size and had that laminated. Oh, and leave us not forget . . my DL!

I wear a CA notary I.D. badge issued by the company I teach notary classes for. It looks like a government I.D. and, for instance, it gets me into the jail in Riverside without a problem.

It's laminated and I wear it as a necklace type badge. I wear it every time I do any notary work.

It would just cost us more money. You know XYZ would want big money and the state is always looking for more revenue.

I don't think NNA should have anything to do with it. My vote is for it to be a card issued by the state, with the SOS or Governor's signature on it. It should come with our commission certificates.

Re: You don't understand the meaning of the word "copy"?

Sure, but why carry a copy, when the state could just as easily provide me with a wallet-sized card as they do for all other commissions?

I had one of these back when I first started

I wasn't happy with the quality and the clip broke real quick - never replaced it...never had a need - I've been questioned once for ID...

I've only been asked once in 7 years for ID -

no problem. As long as it is the state, ok. Other org? No way!

Easy enough with today's technology to shrink certificate down, then laminate by self though. Oops, I'm just not so inclined.
