Got my first e-sign request today...

company asked if I was set up with AmTrust - no, sorry, I'm not - although I attended their webinar quite some time ago I've never been "set up" with them (I don't think)...

My point - 3 years doing this and I'm just now receiving my first e-sign request...something to watch and see if I get more - may have to consider the setup..Smile

I'm still a little nervous about the whole thing. I took the NNA's free course on eNotarization and still finished it not understanding anything about it. I really have no interest in obtaining all of these electronic security gadgets instead of my trusty stamp and embosser.

E-signings and E-notarizations are two different things

I'm talking about e-signing loan documents...

I have mine too and I am nervous about it as well I can not even set up my $500 Enjoa machine I bought and I am computer lit. I took the test online as well. I am not sure I will be able to do it when the time comes. Do you know how to do it? Any pointers? Have you done one? Can you share? If so? I have not had any requests yet but I am dreading the day already and I don't have my machine set up nor am I ready? Help???

There was a thread on this the other day. I'm not set up for esigning, so didn't participate in it, but you can look back a couple days for a discussion on it. I've seen videos on it myself, and still don't really understand what they require. I understand the software part, but above and beyond that, I don't understand it at all. Sounds, to me, like you have to do the software signing PLUS print the docs and have a hard copy signing of the same thing. Sounds like TWO closings to me, or at least a closing with a piggy back, No? I can tell you one thing for sure is that I have no intention of doing one for less than a regular fee minimum of $125 - $175 in my backyard.

I think that esignings will come to be the norm, on day, whether we like it or not. I can see the pluses and the negatives. At this point I'm avoiding them like the plague. Besides that, I don't use a laptop so I couldn't do them anyway. LOL

It APPEARS to me that if you want to do Esignings, and do that well, that you should have3 laptop computers hooked together so each borrower has access to the signing. If you are in an area that has no service, I suppose you just download the answers and when you get to a service area that you then transfer you info. Don't really know how it works.

Linda, there is no "setup" you need to do aside from having the equipment necessary. The first time you agree to do an esign, you go through a few extra steps to set up your account on Gemstone, but it's really easy. The only thing is, you can't do that until you have an assignment first. Only after that can you log in whenever you want.

Thanks everyone for your input

Wish I'd known when the company called that no "setup" was involved - guess the SS that called isn't all that familiar with e-signings either because that's what she asked...

Oh well...like I said that's the very first call I've gotten for one - I have the laptop - am just balking at the aircard for now....

I'm one of those old school people who are very hesitant with a lot of the new technology (not to mention most of it is Greek to me) - guess I'll just go back and watch the video again...also check out that other website that was posted the other day with the training and review...

Again, thanks everyone!!

Re: Thanks everyone for your input

I think it could be that when some of them talk about "set-up", they're primarily talking about the laptop and aircard/modem. I haven't done any yet, but I'm getting ready to take the plunge whenever I can find some spare time to study up on the online tutorial. Soon, I hope. I have the laptop, but I'm not wild about making a long term commitment to any additional monthly fees (i.e. aircard) if I don't know if it's going to payoff.

I won't do it yet - one call in 3 years, to me, doesn't qualify as the "volume" I'd need to justify the expense - not to mention I know that the signal strength in my area, and the surrounding counties, is not the best - I know how spotty our cell phone reception can be here - my purchasing an aircard would be a silly waste of money. The absolutely only way I'd do e-signings right now is if the borrower had the computer and internet connection.

Linda, let me know if you have any questions.

I've done almost ten Amtrust eSign (I'm trying to get certified). Apparently, there are notaries accepting these closings who aren't tech-savvy, or haven't taken the time to do the online training and practice. I say this because I frequently receive emails from Amtrust and the Title company hiring me stating that notaries have been making careless mistakes when using eSign and blaming it on the software. I'm no tech-guru. But before my first eSign I completed the training 3x (I hate being unprepared). I also saved the URL site under my favorites on my laptop. Finally, before I leave for an appointment I log in to the AmTrust site and make sure I can pull up the eDocs easily.

Amtrust signings are not complicated.

Evidently some notaries have trouble accessing the site, but I have not experienced that. I like them and the pay is fair, no deduction in fees for the electronic portion of the signing. I don't know how it will all be electronic in Louisiana due to our witness requirements, but maybe in other states that is possible. I will take all I can get of these signings myself. Best of luck and let me know if I can help in any way.

I agree with you Janet, they are not complicated

I have completed about 20 eSignings so far.

The one I had on Wednesday took a little longer since they are not allowing you to print the full copy for the borrowers that includes the docs to be esigned. I used to quickly review the paper copies with the borrower prior to signing on for the electronic portion of the signing and it seemed to go a little faster. Now, the borrower must read the esigned documents on the computer screen and it takes longer than if they were just reviewing them to ensure that the terms and other information are the same as the printed docs.

You save the time and resources spent in printing the full document set, but you end up spending more time at the table for the eSign portion of the closing.

Re: Linda, let me know if you have any questions.

E-signings aren't difficult, but they can take a little longer because it is a two-step process.
The companies that are basing fees on the amount of paper docs obviously don't understand that we have additional requirements. Some notaries have laptops & some don't. I've done a few & it is fairly simple. The main issue for notaries is whether to go the cost of a laptop & aircard or cell phone/modem. I haven't seen enough volume to cover the additional costs.
My 1 1/4 cents (dang inflation again).
