When my printer starts to print it will say "processing" and then the small lights go from ready to data to attention. Then the display reads out "load Tray 1 Plain Legal" then I must press the green check button. Then the display says "to use another tray press (green check button). In the past it would read "processing" and start printing. How can I eliminate this irritating extra action. I have looked thru the manual but I am afraid I might have the printer start making coffee rather than print if I tinker too much.

I get the same message but not all the time. Maybe it's the way it's uploaded to us? I have a 2420hp

Don't think so about the upload.

I am going to call HP customer support tomorrow. I think it is an internal setting that I don't want to mess with. If it has worked properly previously, then surely I can get it back to original status.

I'm not a computer expert, (but my daughter is!)
I think you should check the properties settings on your printer from the control panel on your computer..
It may be set to always select tray one (is that a manuel feed door?). I think it should to be set on auto select.
