OT (sort of) about FAX software

Since upgrading to XP with SP3, WinFaxPro 10.2 (the XP version) no longer works nor can it be reinstalled. MS and Symantec will not offer any support since the product was discontinued two years ago. Most of the faxing forums all agree that there's a problem but no one has come up with a solution.

So, I looked around and found "SnappyFax". It seems to be pretty full featured and has a 30 day 'free' use period (full version, not crippled). I downloaded it and installed it, but haven't played with it much.

I was wondering if anyone is using SnappyFax and if so, how they like it. Or if anyone is using some other faxing software, other than the limited faxware that comes with Windows.

SnappyFax can be found at http://www.snappysoftware.com/

I used to use WinFaxPro also and when they discontinues suport and I loaded SP3 I searched quite a bit and I've been using RingCentral as my Fax as well as my 800 number and have been very happy with them for over a couple of years. They have call forwarding from the 800 number as well as a number of voicemail features. The FAX has been extremely reliable and the resolution is every bit as good as my Brother laser fax,

I gave up on fax software a long time ago...

I've found it 100 times easier to use an email based fax service. With fax software, i have tohookup to a land line, and that's getting more difficult.

I use both MaxEmail and Metro HiSpeed.

I actually prefer MetroHiSpeed. (metrofax.com)

It's $13 a month, and you get 1000 pages, sending and/or receiving, doesn't matter.

I've sent TONS of faxes right from my Blackberry with this service.

Re: I gave up on fax software a long time ago...

I switched to MyFax for incoming faxes a couple of months ago (at $10/mo for about 250 pages/mo). I don't receive that many incoming faxes, so it has worked out just fine, so far. I use my home phone / land line for outgoing faxes.

Re: I gave up on fax software a long time ago...

I use J2.com to receive faxes and voice messages via e-mail for $165.00 a year. I am able to send faxes through J2.com for a small fee per page. Also, if you use Microsoft, I believe it comes with a fax program as part of the operating system. Personally, I prefer a standalone fax machine to send faxes and to receive faxes from J2. That way I can make the fax out machine not accept faxes from the land line and any junk faxes I receive, I just delete.

The best part about J2.com is that I can get my faxes from any computer and voice messages by calling my message phone number.

I don't know if we are tallking abou the same thing but...

With Ring Central I don't need a land line, just a hot spont since I fax directly from my notebook and portable scanner or just notebook and docs I have on file over the world wide web.

A few years ago

I decided to try to build my own computer just for the fun of it. (Well, it was a state of the art 486, so I guess it was more than a few years ... )

When I was looking for a fax, I ran into a one called Mighty Fax. It became RKS fax and now has been bought by a company called Essential Fax. I have used all versions without issue since that first bulit computer as it seem to work better and I could keep better track of my sent and received faxes and phone book than the fax software that came with my computers.

Anyway, here is the link for a free trial ...

A question, if you don't mind

One of the features I liked about WinFax, other than I've been using it since Delrina first introduced it way back when, oh well, I digress.... WinFax and others, allow for 'printing' from any Windows application to a 'fax printer'. That's all well and good. But WinFax let me append pages from the application to an existing fax that was opened in 'edit' mode. Other faxing software that I've seen always seems to want to create a new fax every time an other application printed to it.

I hope that explanation is clear and was wondering if Essential Fax allowed for that.

Here's the scenario that I have: I use Word to create a closing report document and Quickbooks to generate an invoice. With both Word and QB running, I print the Word document to the fax printer, which launches the message manager and creates a fax using the Word document. I then print the QB invoice to the fax printer and the invoice is created as the second page in the fax. I'm looking to do that again.

BTW - WinFax Pro, works just fine, but there's a problem entering phone numbers in the phone book which causes WinFax to terminate. As long as I don't need to create any phonebook entries, I'm all set. (Manually entering phone numbers in the fax application works just fine.)

Re: A question, if you don't mind

Obviouosly I'm not Glenn but if you need to reload Delrina let me know I've still got all the software as well as a Kyocera modem with the blazing speed of 1.2k. Anyway with Ring Central I can fax anything from my computer that I can get into my computer, Word Docs, Excel files, jpeg and tiff files, pdf files really any graphic material and I can print to the Ring Central file on my computer as i would a printer. Just an FYI.

Re: A question, if you don't mind

Thanks, Charles, but I have all the software (registered) and updates. If I only had to fax documents created on my PC, then it wouldn't be a problem, but more than half of the documents that I must fax, is hardcopy documents. Scanning to a file and then sending that file is a two step process, but using WinFax and other faxing software, though requiring a phone line, allows me to scan directly to fax with a simply single click of the mouse.

I'm just spoiled with Delrina WinFax, er..... Symantec WinFax. Smile

I found MyFax...works great. 30 day free trial. $10 a month thereafter with 100 pages outgoing, 200 incoming each month. I love it.
