What is a "courtesy signing"?
A few months ago I had applied online with Single Source Property in Canonsburg, PA. I received an email that requested some additional info from me (the items requested were reasonable) and the email included a question as to whether I did "Courtesy Signings"? When I called the company, the receptionist tried to connect me with a staff member who could answer my question but we were disconnected. In the meantime, I took another call and never did followup. Dear NotRotars, do any of you do "courtesy signings?" I'm sure it means more than just being polite during the closing.

Courtesy signing, convenience signing, off-site closing, notary closing. Pretty much what we do.

I've been referred to as a "Remote" closer many times, usually by LO's.
I guess we have buttons to push. lol

In AZ, "Courtesy Signings" for our purposes are the same thing as any other loan doc signings we do. It's called Courtesy Signing suggesting to the borrower that there is no fee paid by them and/or with large lenders or title companies, it's when one office arranges a signing at another office within their corporate network for the convenience of the borrower.
This was a frequent occurance with LandAmerica for example, where Phoenix is so large an area 2 Phoenix offices allowed clients of another LandAmerica office use their facility for the signing usually because it was more convenient a location for the borrower.
I hope that helps.

...until the BO looked at their HUD and figured
out it wasn't a "courtesy signing" after all right?

I had an interesting one a while back
Fella given to Epileptic Seizures, so the TC arranged for me to sign at his home at a very specific time around his med cycle.
We get there and get started and it turns out he fancies himself something of an ADA expert to. He's not gonna sign if there's a charge for a mobile notary on the statement, that's a reasonable accommodation and they should pay for it.
He goes through his little tirade for about 15 minutes when I pick up the docs and toss them into my briefcase. "Ya know what, I do good work and I get paid for it. You want me to work for no pay so we're outa here."
After the selling agent (present at the table) recovered some of the color in his complexion. He convinced him that everyone was being fair to him...yada yada yada... and would I please just get this done before his meds wear off.
"Okay, but I don't want to hear another word of this crap."

Notaries need to be willing to walk off when they are being
abused which is clearly what was going on here. The end of the world won't come when you treat yourself with respect. OTOH, if you don't treat yourself and your business with respect, the end of your business might come.

I have walked off with the paperwork more than once. I believe in great customer service, however that does not include abuse of any kind.

Wow! did you really say "Okay, but I don't want to hear another word of this crap."? Good for you LOL (or did you just imply it, either way ok)!
Some people expect the world to be handed to them just because they have a problem. While it is always good to help others in need - guess what? The rest of the world DIDN'T CAUSE THEIR PROBLEM. Yeah I'll probably get slammed for saying that but you know? I'm the first person that will run to hold a door for someone in a wheelchair. AND I am a volunteer for the Honor Flight Program (paying MY OWN way) for WW II Veterans etc. And I've been a volunteer with the Jaycees for nearly 30 years - 20 years past the actual membership period.
BUT it is when someone DEMANDS and EXPECTS everyone else to bend over and give them everything for FREE that bugs me beyond all tolerance. And then they WHINE about it? Brrrrr!
Okay, slam away but maybe somebody will agree with me...

I agree with you Gary. All too often, some people think they have the right to boss/abuse people around due to some type of disability they have. When something happens that they don't agree with, they have a tendency to verbally abuse anyone who is within hearing distance. When that happens, I take my leave as soon as I possibly can - I do not have to tolerate abusive behavior from anyone which includes a borrower/co-borrower.
There are others who know and understand they have a disability but choose to accept it gracefully and treat others with the same amount of grace and goodwill.

Used to be that they were signings conducted in the title office as a courtesy to tiltle during their peak periods and when they didn't have enough staff on hand to handle the load.
This grew into doing after hours closings for them. It also was to assist in meeting home-bound signers, rural signers that couldn't get into town and also those working out in the field (i.e. here in the oil/gas/mineral fields).
