Interesting Bills in the CA assembly to watch...
Some of these were just introduced in the last month or so. You can look up the details at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov and enter the bill number.
Personally... why can't they introduce a bill to get us Notary ID cards? There are bills for "legal document assistants" to have ID cards... why not us?
And I'm still miffed that the Matricula Consular bill hasn't died yet. That's AB 442.

Here are the others... nothing too major that I can see, but interesting anyway. Though I'm not sure about the SOL on our bonds... I honestly don't know what they are now.
AB 898 - Would restrict the ability to handle protests only to notaries who are employed by 'financial institutions', it also (from what I can tell) would restrict the ability to use proof of execution of subscribing witness on any document requiring a thumbprint
AB 724 - Nothing specific regarding notary law, except that it might be something we would see a lot more, would create a Revocable Transfer on Death Deed... which (I guess) works instead of a will? It's meant to help avoid probate, especially for those who are on Medi-Cal or low income. At least, that's what I read of it. The only reason a notary would be involved, of course, would be to notarize the acknowledgment on this type of deed.
AB 620 - State law says that someone involved in the management of every professional copy shop be a notary in order to register with the state. This bill would allow for a non-management staff member (or independent notary) to be the shop's registered notary so long as they give written permission for the shop to use their commission for registration. (*Heh... I'll bet the whole expanded background check thing and the massive drop off in notaries is the reason for this one!)
AB 353 - Sets and expands statute of limitations on taking action on a notary's bond (among other things) for various things to between 1-6 years depending on the claim

Thanks for posting this ....
There is so much going on, it is tough to keep track of what is being thrown at us.
What is even more disturbing is when you call the district office of your state assembly person or state senator, they have no idea what you are talking about. I sometimes wonder if they even read the comments from their website.
I am still hoping Arnold will veto AB 442 should it make it do his desk. In fact, he needs to veto every @@@#$#@@#$ bill until they get the budget cut back where it's suppose to be.

You mean with all the hoops you have to jump thru...
... you don't have an ID card?
"Personally... why can't they introduce a bill to get us Notary ID cards? There are bills for "legal document assistants" to have ID cards... why not us?"
NY just started issuing photo ID cards for real estate licensees... I'll be getting mine when I renew at the end of this year. Even though notaries are commissioned through the SOS, the initial commission, all renewals, and the ID card itself are all handled by the same State Division of Licensing. The difference is that I HAVE to carry my real estate pocket card with me at all times; the notary ID could sit in a drawer somewhere for all they care. I'm hoping at some point they get around to standardizing the ID requirements, but NY government is notoriously dysfunctional...
