Re: Joke of the day... oops

It's 4:30 here on the Left Coast. I get a call to do a 6:30 PM signing in San Jose which is about 40 plus miles from home. Edocs of course, to be ready "very soon". Let's see, the last I remember this is a Friday so traffic would dictate that a normal one hour's drive should be at least 1-1/2 hours, and possibly 2 hours. Oh, and the fee is $90.

Big joke.

Oh, and the fee is $90.

I want to know wth decided $90 was going to be "the" fee for 2009.
Lots of SS's offering $90 these days.
Whomever it is, they're out of their minds with fuel costs rising daily.
We'll be back up to $4/gal/reg before the end of summer, IMO.

$90 is a joke to travel that far. I'm in quite a rural area and I'm over 5 miles to anywhere. Lucky for me I suppose, is that there really isn't but two of us out here within 5 miles anyway...lol

All *I* can get in 5 miles is milk and gas!! Anything better than that and I have to go 15 miles!

yup...pretty much same thing here too. Even Charter won't hook us up because we're too far out. Would you happen to be near the end of a gravel road too, Linda? Those have their own way of washing out in the rain...lol

Nope...we're down 2.5 miles of dirt road - I'd KILL for gravel...beginning of April we had so much rain I had to turn jobs down because I couldn't get out of my street -

And the only internet service I get here is satellite!!.....Yeppers...country living at its best!!

When the gravel washes away, we're left with large enough ruts to literally sink a 1/2 ton truck tire.

You get satellite??? I'm jealous!!!

I swear, I'm considering moving to town just to get better than dial up.

We had dial-up when we first moved here - as bad as the satellite is I could never deal with dial-up again...you have my sympathy...Smile

lol...thanks!

Think next time I have docs d/l'ed to me and have a bit of extra time, I'll head into town to a wifi hotspot with my laptop, get them dd'ed to that, then hook up the laptop to the dialup to print the docs. Even though it takes at least 10 minutes to get there, it's still going to be faster than waiting on dialup...lol

No offense but I didn't know dial-up still existed really...I remember having that in the early 90s

Oh yes, dial up still exists, I lived with it until 6 months ago and I finally found Hughesnet!!!

Re: Oh, and the fee is $90....LOL

We were going to go with HughesNet, but the local provider wanted $600 to get us hooked up since we're so far out, then an additional $100 on the spot just for the pole, and an additional $60 per month for a while 25 hours of time.

Decided that even though dial up really stinks, it's more cost effective, and I have no limits on how long I can stay online.

Yep - we went the whole $700 route but we had a $200-$300 rebate - ended up costing us about $400 total - but we pay $85/mo for service - no limitation - I pray for Comcast to link into our area - they're about 2-3 miles away!!

Re: $90 each way would be more like it.

In the more rural areas, you are better off going with a laptop and an aircard. The price through AT&T is about $70 a month, but if you're in an area where you can only get dial up, it is a godsend, and the price is only about 15 to 20 dollars more considering the cost of your phone line, the separate internet account, ect., its worth so much more that the add'l few bucks that you pay each month, and its amazingly fast compared to dial-up. Also, it seems that the best coverage from state to state is with AT&T, but Sprint has quite a large coverage area as well. In your dial up areas, it is the best way to go!!

Re: $90 each way would be more like it.

While that may be true in some instances, some of the roads I travel to do signings, I can't even get any type of phone signal at all, which also means that there's no wifi connection either (according to the people I've spoken to about it). Amazingly enough, I haven't had any problems using the system I have set up now.
