Signing a Document Twice
Was speaking with a notary friend who told me that he had to notarize a document, but the person had already signed it. He said that there were no extra copies, so he just had the person sign it again and notarized that signature. Is this common practice?

Depends
With an acknowledgment, there is no need to have the signer sign their name again, as they only need to 'acknowledge' that it is their signature.
However, with a jurat, it's a bit different. The signature signifies that the signer has been placed under oath and they swear (or affirm) to the contents of the document. Therefore, the notary places the signer under oath, and the signer then signs the document and finally, the notary completes the jurat. So, with a jurat, if the document had been previously signed, the signer would need to sign again after the oath (or affirmation) was administered.

Yes, I have asked the signer to sign the doc again if a jurat was required for the notarization.
As PAW, stated, on an acknowledgment I've asked the signer to verbally acknowledge that he signed the doc but I do not ask him to re-sign.

But either way, no one will care if it is signed by
the same person twice to assure proper notary procedure, IMHO, whether jurat or ack.
