printer in car?
I may sound ignorant, but just how does that work? Any recommendations for printers for that purpose?

Search using the term "mobile office". You should come up with explananations and recommendations.

I know there are portable ink jet printers, but have yet to find a portable laser.

Re: printer in car? I have a laser...
I have a laser just HP 1018 that is a great fast machine. 1000 watt Inverter that runs it like a charm with my air card and lap top that makes my car a mobile office. It takes some $$$ to set it up but it has paid off when the docs run late. I can print on the fly. Good Luck

I have a laser (Brother hl1540) that is a great fast machine. A 1000 watt Inverter hard wired into the car that runs it like a charm with my air card and a HP 1035nr lap top that makes my car a mobile office. It takes some $$$ to set it up but it has paid off when the docs run late. I can print on the fly. Good Luck

I made arrangements for a mobile office about 2 - 2 1/2 years ago since everyone was talking about it and it seemed like the thing to do if we wanted to be super-successful in this biz. I had everything except the inverter (had to take my printer in somewhere to print). I only used it once. Then the bottom fell out of the real estate market and a mobile office was definitely not needed. I reduced my aircard plan to the minimum available and finally reached the 2-year mark on my contract last month - got rid of that puppy the first day I was eligible without penalty.
I did use my mobile set-up once again 2 -3 months ago... I had a very busy day and didn't have all the docs I needed before I left. It was such a PITA that I decided that was the last time I would be doing it. The flash drive idea printing at Kinkos seems like the best option for me if I need to go that route. However, after the last two years being so painfully slow, although I'm enjoying the increased business over the last few months due to the lower interest rates, I'm taking it one day at a time and not counting on it continuing. For me with this temporary surge in business, I peaked with a fabulous March and it has been slower in April and especially May.
I've gone back to school to learn a new skill so I can obtain a certification that will allow me to work in a new field - I'm continuing with those plans.

I agree with you and think you are doing a very wise thing going back to school. "Keep your day job." There is no way of telling how long this sudden burst of business is going to last. Plus all the drawbacks of notary work late pays, no pays, car repairs, fuel going back up again and all the other expenses. You all know "the drill."
JMO It is just to risky to depend on notary work to pay your bills and no substitute for a steady paycheck. Everything in this economy is changing by the second and it is impossible to tell which end is up. Notary work could be over in a heart beat.
My policy is no new equipment, buy as you go and stash the cash. Again folks JMO. Flash drive works just fine for me. Download at work and print later.
My thinking is matching your's just take it a second at a time. Hang on for a very bumpy ride.
Copperhead I wish you the very best of luck with school. That's smart thinking kiddo! Hang in there and stay safe.

Re: Thanks, Teddog/CO!
It was actually kind of comical - so slow the last two years I finally bit the bullet last December and signed up for classes at the local community college to begin my certification course (classes began in January). Then wouldn't you know that's exactly when things started really picking up with the notary biz!
It was A LOT of work these last few months but I managed to do an increased amount of loan signings in addition to attending and studying for very demanding classes. I'm riding the low interest and foreclosure wave as long as it lasts, but I am also continuing with my classes over the summer and on into the fall '09 and spring '10 semesters because I just don't think we can count on this lasting.
Thanks again Teddog for the encouragement!
