Alabama Notary Conference 2009
For those unable to attend the 2009 Alabama Notary Conference the SOS's office has posted the highlights on their website:

Yipeee Yi Yay!
Thanks for finding and posting this, Tonya. I did not take copious notes at the meeting because the speakers kept saying, "this will be posted on the website".

Sad to watch
If you watch the last video where the Legal Advisor to the SOS reads out the very few notary laws we have and then minutes later is unable to answer questions from the audience relating directly to the laws she just read, her only response was you should check here or there when she had just read the darn law aloud, I was ashamed and embarrassed for her.
Then they let Mister NNA give hie opinions on some questions and that was a joke, but at least he got things half right.
All really unbelievable, they did not answer questions afterward, they pretty quickly ran us off.

Re: Sad to watch
Thanks for the post, Tanya. I found it at 10 PM and just finished it at a little after 2 AM. Did not get to attend, and wondered what I missed. Like Jim said, it was a bit odd that the Legal Advisor did such a poor job of answering quesitons. Remember though, attorneys/politicians seldom give direct answers, even when written and held in their hands. I guess it's due to a fear of being held accountable. At least I learned why I did not receive an invitation; I moved 10 years ago and never thoguht to inform the Probate Judge. Oh, by the way, am I the only one using an ink stamp, rather than an emosser? Duh........

No you are not the only one. Many, many notaries are using the rubber stamps. I have two of them (that I don't use). Unfortunately, many notaries in the state have no idea what the laws are and have probably never read them. When I was first commissioned, the bank I work for handed be my embosser and said "Here ya go". When my commission renewed, that handed me a rubber stamp that looked like the seal. That was it. Everything I learned about notary laws I had to learn on my own. I wish we could use the rubber stamp, that embosser kills my hand! I do use the stamp in addition to my embosser on recordable document.

I find it strange that you don't have to use a seal at all in Alabama, your signature is your seal; but if you do, it must be an embosser.

Tonya, where did you get that info from, agree but curious?
Here is what SOS site says.
Seal.
For the authentication of his official acts, each notary must provide a seal of office, which must present, by its impression, his name, office, state and the county for which he was appointed. (Code 1852, §858; Code 1867, §1084; Code 1876, §1330; Code 1886, §1106; Code 1896, §3026; Code 1907, §5167; Code 1923, §9243; Code 1940, T. 40, §6.)
What AG opinion says is.
A notarial seal is not necessary to authenticate the certificate of acknowledgment of an Alabama notary. Such seal when used must be embossed.

Re: Sad to watch
I learned a couple of interesting facts from the presentations posted. But I figure, it the first attempt by the SOS office to hold such a conference. Maybe they will improve on future conferences (if any) and be able to go more in depth regarding common issues.
