I have a dumb question....

I was looking at an extra printer to purchase and I found a lexmark E260dn pretty cheap. However, I do not understand the "duplexing" part of it. I know what duplexing means, but would I still be able to print single sided as well? Thanks in advance for any clarification =)

With most printers that have duplex capabilities you can still set it not to in "printer properties" or "printer preferences". You might research what the maintenance cost of the printer is going to be--cost or toner cartridges & capacity of those cartridges. The costs of those for some printers will eat you up.

All three of my laser printers have built-in duplexing capability. By default they print single sided. I often use the duplexing for personal stuff to save paper.

Some printers offer an optional component that attaches to your printer to make it a duplexor. If thinking of duplexing, I would highly suggest getting a printer with it built-in. My HP 2200dse has been going strong since 2001 as has my HP 2300 network printer since 2005.

No such thing as a dumb question Julie, dumb not to ask one

Never heard of a duplex printer that would not print single sided, duplex is just a paper save option and I do know of some NSA's who print borrowers set in duplex for this reason...kinda like the ones who print BO copy on letter only.

Re: I have a dumb question....FWIW I'd hate to see you

get into a Lexmark without knwoing all the facts. Ii don't know the specific printer you are talking about but I have a bit of a story to relate. Two years ago Farmers insurance required that we buy a specific scanner which was an all in one from lexmark. The machine was dirt cheap and so it was not much of a sacrifice until one by one all the funcitons stopped working. The scanner still works by the way. The machine was connected to only one computer in my office and that computer started acting up and doing wierd things. I decided to remove the scanner and go back to my flatbed and Farmers was starting to relent so I disconnected it. That is when the nightmare staerted. The Lexmark operating system iinvaded my computer and literally imbedded itself in many of myh othe programs. I finally started to hunt down Lexmark applets and one by one eliminated them. In the final analysis the machine was inexpensive to acquire and wored well enough while it workede but when I needed to remove it I spend an incredible amount of time extracting the program from my computer. I'm not making any suggestions and the systems may have changed, after all it was two years ago, but I will never buy anything from Lexmark again. YMMV

Wow Charles. Never heard of a printer invadng back to the

PC, that is really weird. I have a Lexmark T642n and it is awesome for quick 45PPM ltr/legal printing (over 600mb memory). I have had to have it replaced under warranty, but replacement still runs like a champ.

Did you ever determine how or why it did this?

Thank you all for your input. The one I was looking at is a Lexmark E260DN. I have 2 HP 3055's that have both crapped out on me. The original one lasted about 2-3 yrs and this last one I bought only lasted a year. The tech said it would cost more than their worth to try and fix them so I was searching for something "in the mean time".

I ended up with a Brother HL5250DNT after nothing but problems with HP printers. It does a great job & the cost of toner & drums is economical (buy from LD Products).
