UPS charges
I received a UPS bill today for almost $100.00 for shipped documents. Apparentaly what happened was that 3 seperate packages were charged to me. They told me that the shipping lable is 3 parts (duh) if the driver does NOT take the last part off before delivering, that it can be traced by your account # that is in the bar code at the very bottom of the label.
Your account is printed into the bar code only IF you order these from UPS. I was not aware that my account # was on there. It was suggested that we use labels picked up somewhere rather than ordering them! I have always been deligent with these packages and why should I be charged if the driver doesn't do his job properly..they took away all the charges!
This was a first for me and I learned something today!!

Yep! In the dead of night I go 3 miles away to the drop box at a title co. and take all the airbills I need! Ditto for Fedex. I never had a problem before, but I don't really want the aggravation of dealing with erroneous bills.

I never put my name on return part of label. I put the receiver on both sides. UPS is famous for billing me when the receiver is clearly checked.

Good lesson learned and great that you got your $$ back. UPS is notorious for this.
Been discussed here numerous times. NEVER use your account or labels provided to you using your account.
You can get supplies from UPS or FedEx w/o an account, if they give you a hard time just tell them that you will tell all your customers they will have to use their competition because you cannot get supplies and they will jump through hoops to get you supplies.
Never write your name phone number etc...on ship labels. I always use the name of the scheduler and their company name (ss or TC) and phone number since they are the ones paying you and instructing you how to ship, let them take care of stray bills.

MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE TRACKING NUMBER ON LABEL YOU GET
NOw that I got your attention, I wont shout. This happened to me a month ago. I like everyone else do not use my own labels. I went by and picked up a label at a normal drop box. Hurriedly filled it out as normal and but it back into the UPS box.
2 days later I received call from SS wanting to know where package was. Gave him the tracking number. Turns out it was being held in Louisville for being a suspcious package.
I didnt notice that the label actually had been someones personal label and not the generic ones. Someone had put their old ones in the box. They hadnt paid their bill. Sooo based on the account number, not that I had marked the package to be paid for by the title company and used their account number. UPS held the package until I could get it cleared up. What a nightmare!!

Apparently UPS is having a very bad time with a lot of fraudulent shipping. It's only happened to me once or twice, and they took the charges off immediately. I also only handwrite the shipping labels, and never put my name is as sender. Nothing has come back on me in quite a while. UPS is is PIA.

And I on the other hand have only had these problems with FedEx. FYI Any carrier can, by federal (old ICC) now STB rules charge the sender when they can not collect from the cosignee. FYI again, both UPS abd FedEx add a "re-bill charge", generally $10, when they can not charge or collect from the account that was listed as the bill to. Warning: what if when you use the consignee, or some other address other than yours, as both the shipper and ship to, you were to miss-address both, now it is in "limbo" in that vast system? The reason I will use my info as the shipper and take care of the rebill problems. That's just part of doing business. And I know, "No one has ever had a package lost because of this". Sure!

Interesting that the UPS account number is in the bar code. I guess I thought they went by the tracking number and connected that to your name. How did they bill you? Did it just show up on your bank account or did they send you a bill? It's becoming harder and harder to find UPS labels around here. The UPS stores won't carry them now and a lot of the drop boxes don't have supplies either.

UPS Tracking Number contains UPS Account Number
Ex: 1Z XXX YYY 01 9522 2269
1Z = Domestic UPS XXX YYY = Account number of sender (not necessarily the "bill to" account number) 01 = Type of service 9522 2269 = tracking identification sequence number

Re: UPS Tracking Number contains UPS Account Number
I never use my name, account #, address etc..I always handwrite the labels. I received the bill in the mail and it was marked for collections!
I had not received a bill prior to this one either. When I called it was explained to me that my account # is at the very bottom in the bar code..
