Looking for Notary Resources
Looking for a copy of Victoria Ring's book How to Start, Operate and Market a Freelance Notary Signing Business and any other recommended reading.

You might trying searching message 33325, using the orange search button. There are some reading/training material suggestions there. Also, NotaryRotary has an excellent training manual. I started out reading Victoria's book. It's ok, but I think there are probably better resources available. LOL

Victoria Ring's book is not recommended reading. The TSR in the Supplies section of this site is the best resource along with the messages on this forum

Victoria Ring jumped ship several years ago
She's no longer in the field! She's making her next fortune off of bankruptcy preparation. The grapevine was saying that she only did loan signings for a few months, and if that is true, she wouldn't be the best person to give advice in the field, IMO. From what I understand, she is no longer selling that e-book.

You are right, she only did loan signings for a few months.

What pisses me off about her, is that she is purporting to
be a legal professional or a BPP (bankrptucy petition preparer) and then selling these, "how to" guides to ANYONE without any legal experience! She's a joke!

Sounds very familiar....a lot like the NSA promos from ten different places which hyped the business into heavy competition and flatter fees. Same thing. People without experience at being a notary became loan signers. Some of them very successful ones over the years.
But back to the OP's original question...about VR's SA book:
Aaron, you can find it on Amazon for $25-$30. (Even the used ones are expensive in comparison to the $15 it used to be.) http://www.amazon.com/Operate-Market-Freelance-Signing-Business/dp/0976159104/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1256429191&sr=8-2
In my opinion, VR's signing agent book was a good place to *start* and gave the basics of starting and running a notary signing agent business. (Duck! Rotten tomatoes may start now because VR has many detractors...and the laughable thing is that probably only 5% of them have read her book. I know that I have talked with three different successful notaries by phone who have poo-poohed her book and declared it awful. When I asked them, "So...you've read it?" The answer was, "Oh, No! No way! Of course not!" )
Here's my opinion on the VR book. Start there. But, if her book is as far as a person goes with their research into the business then they'll probably sink rather than swim.
She gives a decent overview of the concept of the business. Either someone will "get it" or they won't and will hope to be spoon fed all the rules and all the fees and how to market, etc. in one place, book or course. No one book can do that. A favorite quote of mine: "We learn to do by doing." It's going to take some doing and digging on the new SA's part.
It won't matter if a person starts with NNA route, the SR route or any other route. There are those who are cut out for being an NSA and will understand their notary rules, the concepts of running a business, marketing, profit and so forth and who will scrape together a business no matter what. Then, there are those who will feel like they can stop learning after reading a basic primer and they will not succeed.

Re: Aaron
Amen to that. Brenda's free advice on her website is quite good.
Also, the SR Training Guide (Signing Registry) is a great resource over just about any book you can get. It used to be listed here at NotRot under Notary Supplies... but I don't see it anymore. Maybe I'm missing it?

I met Victoria some years back , at the NNA convention in
LasVegas. I told her, flat out, that she had some excellent makrketing advice in her offerings. but that she did not know jack about notary law nor about NSA proceedures. I dropped a few names to her, and she eventually hooked up wtih the REAL Victoria R NSA, (Victoria Rivera) V Rivera, moderated a few conference call classes and marketed V. Rivera's book, Just Point And Sign, (IMO the original NSA bible. ) Victoria Rivera told me that they soon had a falling out. and that V. Ring had gone on to other endeavors.

Ah, yes, the REAL Victoria R ...
Rivera, that is! She had always been a valuable resource on the boards, going back to old NASA days. What ever became of her?

At one time she contacted me with an "opportunity"
that was totally non-notary related.

Re: What pisses me off about her, is that she is purporting to
Brenda, I think at one point she had excerpts from her book on her web site. I never bought her book, either, but I do recall reading what I think was one chapter. It was probably posted as a come-on to sell the book. (This was probably about five years ago, so the details are a little fuzzy.) However, I found it to be full of information that I thought questionable, at best. Some of it I just flat out disagreed with and some of I think was outright wrong (at least for my state). But that's just my recollection. Needless to say, I was unimpressed, and I wonder if that isn't where others have come up with their negative impressions.

Oh, boy....
Ahhh... Victoria Ring.
It's interesting for me to be in TWO fields where her name is brought up. She's well known in the Virtual Assistant world, too. There's a new niche of VAs called Virtual Bankruptcy Assistants... and she's written a How-To book for them as well. She's essentially taking credit for creating the VBA field. I also follow her because she sets herself as a training instructor --- which is my MY niche as a VA. I'm a technical writer and a produce instructional materials. I've never met her, though.
Unfortunately, many of the would be VAs are not as knowledgeable or discerning about the topic at hand. In the VA world, she has as many mixed reviews as she does in the Notary world. Some people like her, others don't.
In the VA world, there are a handful of individuals who are essentially the XYZ of the industry, if that makes any sense. Only, there are about 5 or 6 of them - mostly individuals who market products and services to VAs with a limited background of actual experience. Now, lack of experience alone is not always bad. As a technical writer, I often have little to no experience on the topics I write about, however I also have SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) I deal with who check my work. Victoria's training materials, in my opinion, do not reflect the best. They are not the worst, either.
I do hope that her VBA knowledge is better than her notary knowledge.

She's making her next million
by just selling her books and arranging these conventions. I'm NOT about to invest to see if any of it holds water.

Texas, like CA abd Fl, are large states with a large land area and a large population. To help you better, it would be helpful if you told us what part of the state you are in.

Re: I own this book
Aaron, I actually have this book and I will admit it did help me! It helped me to set up a plan of how to get going in this field! I already had been a notary for a few years before I became an NSA so I knew my notary laws which is a must. I also had been doing closings for a former employer so I had the experience. I wasn't sure how to get going on my own. I did follow some of her advise and it worked for me! Did this book go into detail about a lot of things we do NO, but it did give me good advise on what to do with the experience I already had. The rest I learned from a lot of research and I was fortunate enough to actually talk to a quite a few very successful NSAs!
