Overpaid! I hate when that happens!
Got an assignment in late August from a SS who shall remain nameless. All went well, and I was paid in late September. 2 weeks ago, that SS paid me again. Great, except I had to call them to see if I could shred the check or if I had to return it. They thanked me, and I shredded it. Yesterday, I got another check from them for the same assignment! They haven't yet called me back with the disposition on this check, but I hate to see all these checks go by that I can't use! (Tried to suggest a credit on their account, but that didn't fly!) Maybe the next one I get I can keep.

That's funny, Rick. We usually have a hard enough time to get them to pay us once. I also had a company send me 2 checks. It really hurt to see one go by that I couldn't cash or deposit. LOL

I received a check a few days ago from a TC that I haven't worked for since June. I checked my records (not many since it's been so slow for me) and confirmed that I had not worked that file. I contacted them and they apologized, said it was supposed to go to another notary with the same first name as mine. Told me they are stopping payment on it and please shred.
They thanked me for my honesty. I took the opportunity to remind them of my service areas and invited them to call me.

Deposit the check and mail them a statement showing a credit. The statement should include a note explaining how to ask that the credit be refunded. That's what the credit card companies, utility companies, and most other vendors do.

No can do - I don't work that way. This has been a good client in the past and I don't cash checks I know that I didn't earn.

Yeah, was overpaid by $100 a couple of months ago by a very regular, very reliable ss. Called, returned check per request and correct check was in mail next day. Like I said, reliable ss. And, I'm able to sleep good at night ...

Overpaid! happens monthly here!
Happens all the time to me. I am James C. Martin and their is a James L. Martin in Indiana that long ago cashed many of my checks, but usually (C b4 M) I get his checks and have to return to be sent to him.
PITA, phone calls, emails and postage on my dime to fix his/their error.
Had a SS tell me yesterday that I need to send them a check for $365.00 for 3 closings they sent to me vs. him. They were all sent in past week and all sent to an address I do not use any longer. They actually still expected me to pay them even though I have never received, seen or cashed the checks. NO way.

Had to shred one this week, too. Hate that!
This one was from a company that I haven't worked for in over a year (and probably won't work for again due to fees). The check stub didn't have a borrower name or an invoice (at least that I could identify), so I wondered if it might have been something I agreed to last minute, but didn't log. However, I couldn't find a confirmation, either. They didn't even have a phone number on the check, so I had to dig through my files to contact them.
Not only is this type of thing a PITA, but just the idea of having to shred $$ is painful... But ya gotta do what's right. In this case, it was supposed to go to another notary with the same last name and same first initial. I've been on the other end of these things enough times, too (i.e. waiting for a check, then being told they already paid it,etc.), so it's an easy decision to make!
