Had a total fiasco tonight!

I had a signing scheduled for 6:30--got docs at about 5 and good to go. Arrive at the borrowers & start to go over the HUD. It turns out it's the wrong file. This company had two signings tonight with the same last names. Of course, there is another notary out there with wrong file also. We call back & forth, and decide best time-saver is meeting to swap packages. She tells me she's still printing, so I agree to go to her. In the meantime she's telling me it's a huge package (200 pages or more). I get there, she's still printing (using an all-in-one--slow, slow, slow). Besides that, she had shrunk the docs, so they were no good. Borrower #1 decided to postpone until tomorrow (per LO). Notary #2 is frazzled & asks me to do signing #2. Never had it happen--show up at appt. with wrong docs.
What are the odds of such a bizarre situation? The ss is under the gun for the mistake.

So was any paperwork signed? If so, who gets paid? If ss messed up, and they hired each notary, will title/lender pay the notaries directly?

Could get really interesting before it's all said and done. That's why I like the ss who number each file--harder to mess up.

Yes, I was able to complete the signing the other notary was supposed to do, at her request, because I had those docs.

The other notary must've been new

since she was printing on an All-N-One.

Re: The other notary must've been new

I use an all-in-one but I only use it for printing and it is as fast as my printer and takes up less space.

Both are laser printers.

Thanks for explaining, Mary. I almost jumped

to a conclusion unfairly.

I thought the same, as I had experinced that at one time, when MFCs 1st came out.

My boss at the motel I work at has all in one and only uses his for faxing.

One night the reg laser printer went out and I hooked up the fax to use until he came in the next day. (It was an all in one and no sense waking him at 3 a.m. when I had all I needed to remedy the situation.)

When I ran the audit and saw how fast it printed a large set of documents, I got me one too!

Re: The other notary must've been new

When I started I thought my all-in-one would work. It was much too slow, and that's what she was dealing with, too. Since I had "been there" at one time myself, I couldn't be too critical. We just couldn't use the docs she had printed.

Actually had it happen to me once. We started the signing and everything was fine until we got to the Mortgage. Last names are correct but first names are not. They sent me 1/2 right docs and 1/2 wrong docs. Same last name. Went home and printed new docs. Got full fee both times. Mine was an easy fix, your's sounds like a fiasco is right. We certainly earn every penny, don't we?

Sorry to hear about the fiasco, Marilynn! But it's good that you ended up getting the signing appointment, and probably will have the re-sign on the other one.

I had a situation once where I was sent the docs in two separate files, and one of the files belonged to a different borrower located in a different state! Extremely similar last names on the files! I noticed it before leaving for appointment, thank heavens!

This was one of those situations with an ss that lowballs you & then there are problems, problems, problems. I am a professional & was determined not to have both borrowers left hanging. Shame on the ss for sending a newbie a 200 page VA loan for $75. The ss stands to lose their client over the screw-up. All the parties involved were pretty cool about the dilemna. It was the ss, trying to save their own a#s, that was the biggest problem. She actually told borrower #2 they HAD to sign, and they were not happy with that. At least I didn't have to deal with angry & unreasonable borrowers.

Absolutely! I find that the lower-paying jobs typically have more work involved! And a 200 page package to boot! Oy-vey!

And all it will end up costing them is a lost client. So much for the cheapo theory.

Re: Same thing happened to me

I received docs from a TC all the 30 or so pages I perused were fine. Started looking at things closer at the table..oops same last name on docs but mixed in were for someone elses docs from another state! Call to TC very happy that I caught this. Asked bo if we could resign later in evening..Sure..went to my other signing down the street. Had my hubby print new set and meet me..Everyone was happy and I got a larger fee to boot!

We have to figure things out in a hurry at times and juggle our lives around to save some peoples a$$ and these companies want to offer these low ball fees! Worse yet notaries are taking these fees!

Re: Details, Details, Details

I had a similar circumstance the other evening. Last minute deal...when I called to confirm with borrower that would be meeting at her house later that night I just barely said the location..thank God! She was in PA and this was a loan for her second home here in FL. TC and I had a good laugh. I told them my jet wasn't out of order and they might try a PA notary! Often times we are rushing and stressed but I have to force myself to slow down and pay careful attention to the details...lots of details.
