Notarizations for Family Members - State of California

I have gone through 52 pages of Handbook and cannot fund any statement that says DON'T DO IT. Need a Calfornia notary to show me the page please.

TIA
gina

We are not Prohibited....see

page 10 of the 2009 handbook...under Conflict of Interest

"A notary public is not prohibited from notarizing for relatives or others, unless doing so
would provide a direct financial or beneficial interest to the notary public."

Many CA Notaries have no problem notarizing for family. I choose not to notarize for anyone related to me by blood or marriage.... my personal decision.

Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I think each individual has to make their own determination. Personally, for me I think it would depend on the document in question - and how close of a family member we are talking about. A spouse? Probably not under any circumstances, unless (maybe) it was a work-related document. I've notarized for my cousins a number of times, though.
