Preprinted FedEx label billing back to me?!

I just printed a package for a signing tomorrow and happened to notice my name, address and phone number printed as sender on the pre-printed label provided in the package (several pages in). A closer look showed that it was marked "bill to sender"! This is for a title company I've never worked for before that was rated highly here (and mentioned on this board fairly recently). I hope it was just an error... They are paying me a decent title co fee (it's a RM), but there was no mention of me paying the return shipping costs - which would no doubt be much higher for me than it would be for them.

Has anyone run into this before?

Yes, I've seen this. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about FedEx billing can answer for sure, but since the TC generated the shipping label on their account, they are the shipper. Even if they entered your name as the return address, since they generated the label using their account, they are considered the shipper and will be billed.

"From" does not necessarily mean "shipper"

If a label is generated through the FedEx Ship Manager system, then a billing account number must be entered even if the account number of the owner of the account is or is not used. The label can be generated with any "From:" name/address as well as "To:" can be any name/address.

I have done this occasionally where I needed some items sent from one location to another, neither of which were my office. I just completed the airbill using the Ship Manager program and sent the preprinted airbill to the business that was actually sending the items, but the shipping was charged to my account. The airbill showed the From: and To: locations, but neither was my location.

Re: Preprinted FedEx/UPS label

Happens to me quite frequently. Simple solution: Black out your name, address & phone number ... and drop off dox in an unattended box.

Re: Preprinted FedEx/UPS label

John, I don't think blacking out your name would make any difference - FedEx still has the info for that label in its computer system since the label was generated electronically.

Re: Preprinted FedEx/UPS label

True.

I agree with your previous post also. I have had this happen to me as well over time and my FedEx account has never been billed/charged as a result.

All shippers (well, those that are left) require an origin zip code and this is how it is accomplished. Sometimes I have even seen the borrower's info listed.

Call them. They generated the label. When I do Fedex labels using online shipping manager, there is a drop box on the right to choose which acct. # the shipping charges are to be billed to. IMO it's an oversight & I'm sure they will correct it.

Thanks, all!

If I'd been thinking more clearly in the wee hours this morning, I'd have realized that they don't have MY FedEx account number. Guess I'm just not used to seeing my full name, address and phone number on anything. (I normally only use my initials when I put my address on a return label - and not my phone number.) In the clear light of day, I can't imagine that they would intentionally bill it back to me.

All comments much appreciated!

Please read the fine print from FED EX on sender (from)

it very clearly states that if the receiver refuses to pay for package, then the fee will be reversed to the sender and they will charge an additional $10.00 fee for reversing the charges. Residential Title out of Tampa pulled that on me a few years ago. Be careful.

Ask the Title or Escrow company to sign-up with ShipTropolis.com so you can print UPS and Fedex labels on demand on their account.

1. ShipTropolis.com is secure for the title/escrow company.
2. It's easy for notaries to quickly create labels on demand.
3. It ensures the notary doesn't get wrongfully stuck with the shipping cost.

Disclaimer: I work for ShipTropolis

Cheers,
Bob
