Record time with lawyer

What's your record time with a lawyer as borrower reading every single word of the loan package. I broke my record tonight 2 1/4 hours. She read every word of the 23 pages of BOA loan instructions as well!

I signed an attorney in June - can't remember for sure how long the entire appointment took, but I think it was about 2 hours. I do remember that he spent 25 minutes reading just the DOT and its two riders. I wanted to scream!

Re: Record time but not a lawyer

Yesterday at my signing the guy took 3.5 hours. He read both sets of docs word for word. He said he needed to make sure that they both sets were exactly the same. He and his wife and signed both sets of docs. He also put sticky all over the docs for title person. He said he just wanted to point out the important things to the Title person. He also said he wanted to make sure they (title) did not miss anything so when he called and talke to them about the loan they would know what was going on. I told him that the people at Title know what they are doing but he people make mistakes. I ask him if he worked for a title company, he said no has rentals and a store that he rents out. ARGHHHHHH that was my saturday afternoon.

OR, I would have sat there till the cows came home if the

borrowers were on the phone with LO getting the loan numbers straighted out, but I would have never, ever sat there while borrowers signed their copies or put sticky notes everywhere or read every word of every page even on their copies. I wasn't there and don't have any idea what the circumstances were and I apologize, but you have to find a way to not let this happen to you again. This is ridiculous. I can be a "take charge" kind of person when I have to be with people like this. It takes tact and a gentle but stern voice that "I am in charge" here and am in control. I had borrowers like this one time and it was the last time I let someone walk all over me. Twice since then, I have completely stopped the closing, talked to the borrowers till they understood what MY role was in the process and then continued. I don't even give them their copies until we are finished. Never have and never will. They stay in my briefcase to prevent what you went through. It has only happened once, but I did stop the closing and pick up everything and walked out the door without saying a word. I had taken all I could from that woman without defending myself. She put me down for the last time and I left. She didn't get her loan that day. I actually went out and sat in my car for a few minutes and called Title. I then went back inside and asked her if she wanted to continue. She said no and I turned around and left.
Reading the docs is one thing, but letting them read their copies, well that is just not going to happen with me. Its time to re-evaluate how you let this happen to see that it NEVER happens again. JMO of course. I feel for you and what you went through.

I completly agree he was way over the control freak end of life. The wife said he does this with everything. I did call the lender and Title but it was Saturday and guess what no one in. It was on a 2nd home so no NRT in the package. So I couldn't tell him to read it on his own time. I would have in a heartbeat. I even took his docs away and so did his wife at one time but he just picked them up and started thumbing through them again. I told him I had needed to get then to Fed Ex and he told me it would be ok if they are sent on Monday. It is done. I am glad I haven't had this happen before. Some people have OCD and that is the only way they can get through life.

curious about your description of your role

I hear differing opinions about whether to let bo's know up front what our role is. Do you do that every time, or only when they're reading everything? What do you say to get them to understand your role?

I had a man who took 2.5 hrs reading everything and telling me about how everything is a conspiracy. We all have our stories - we should write a book! LOL

Look at it as a learning experience and use it as a

skill-building one so this doesn't happen again. I imagine we've all gone thru this once. Trick is to find a way that works for you so that it's not a repeater.

If I might add a humorous point to this, but I find it effectual. I have very jokingly made statements like "if we are going to be a while, where is the refrigerator in case I need it?" then I laugh and tell them to remember that I am there as a notary, that my workday must carry on and that while there is no pressure to hurry, that they have 3 days (unless no rtc) to read it but if they want to read it all, please tell me where I will be sleeping.

I love the response by Ruby above in #305282 (Excessive time at signing).
She said, "I tell them to take all the time they need, I only charge $100 an hour".

Re: I think this was a real case of an OCD Disorder.

However from time to time a reader comes along and as hard as you may try to get them to move it along they keep reading. You get stuck dealing with them unless you get up and walking out of the house all up set. I have had times when I would have like pull my hair out. Compassion get the better part of me and I hang in there. I believe this signer may have been dealing with OCD. It must be a very hard way to live with an OCD Disorder or a person that has OCD. As hard as they try, they just can't give up making sure that all the details in their life is perfect over and over and over over... The part in the brain that gives us the assurance that this is correct (right-done-safe-clean) is missing for them....God Bless them and their families.

Re: I think this was a real case of an OCD Disorder.

Being related to someone with OCD I have seen how it affects them. They are trapped in a mind set they often cannot break free from.
