VuPoint Magic Wand Scanner

I finally have a chance to use it today. I have been practicing with my own DL. It's very easy and comes out great! I am going to bring my little netbook to view it before I leave the borrower's home. It prints very legibly on my printer.

I have seen those advertised & they look really cool. What a great idea to use them to scan ID.
Thanks.

If you have a bed bath and beyond near you, use the 20% off coupon!

Be sure to scan it lengthwise.

I take a piece of tape and fold it over (like double stick tape) so that I can tape the DL to a piece of paper. Then I can hold down the paper and keep the ID from moving as I scan it.

Question................

I am armed with my 20% off coupon. I went to their website, signed up and was sent a printable coupon right away. We have a small portable scanner but must connect to the laptop to use it and we don't take the laptop everywhere we go.

Does the VuPoint work independently of any other device?

Re: Question................

Yes, it does! However, I take my netbook with me so that I can view it to make sure it came out ok.

Re: Question................

I am back from my signing. Pix are pretty good. I did try putting them in a clear plastic sleeve. That's ok if the DL doesn't move.

So...to make sure I have this right...

You use this scanner wand then have to go home to print the image?

Re: So...to make sure I have this right...

Yes. then I print it out when I get home.
You will have to buy a micro SD card to save the image(s). It also comes with a USB cord to connect the wand to your computer. As I said, I bring my netbook along so I can view what I have scanned before I leave the borrowers.

That would be totally impractical for me

Since I drop the packages before I return home...to do it any other way would require an additional 30 miles in travel and gas so this method wouldn't work for me.

Guess I'll stick with stressing to the borrowers the importance of having the copies for me and, if all else fails, my handy dandy portable copier/scanner.

Thanks Shoshanna.

Perhaps you can use the borrower's computer and printer?

My blackberry didn't cut the mustard either but my new MOTO Droid has an awesome camera. :-)

Whenever I need to use my Iphone to take a DL photo I just

email the photo to title. No complaints yet, besides it's rare that I even do it.

Do people really not have a problem with you doing this?

Intellectually I know that whatever damage somebody could do with a stolen driver's license could just as easily be done with the info on a photocopy, but even so, I just wouldn't have it in me to let a complete stranger take a photograph of, or scan my driver's license into their computer. It just seems like that would make it that much easier for it to somehow fall into the wrong hands.

Re: Do people really not have a problem with you doing this?

I always had a personal copier in the car in case they forgot to make a photocopy of their ID. I didn't want someone's ID on my computer or my camera, and I certainly didn't want to have to bring it back to the office and print it out before I could drop the docs. A personal copier may not seem as convenient as a hand-held scanner or a camera phone, but it's one shot and you're done - and there's no question about how, when, or even whether you're going to destroy a file when you're finished.

That being said, I think the majority of borrowers would not question the scanning or taking a photo - they would probably think it was all part of the process.

Re: Do people really not have a problem with you doing this?

I must say that I do feel a bit uncomfortable taking a photo with my phone camera and only have had to do this a handful of times. When a signer can't or doesn't have a copy available I always give them the choice of taking the photo or them faxing during rec. I've never had anyone turning down the option me taking the photo and always delete immediately after printing.

I like the idea of emailing directly to tc instead of bringing it home and printing it. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Do people really not have a problem with you doing this?

So far no problem. In fact, yesterday's borrower was mesermized as he watched me scan the DL with my magic wand. As soona s I print out the ID, I erase it from the SD card. So, it's not even going on to my hard drive.
