I personally have done many, many closings at/in banks over the years. I’ve NEVER had any problems of any kind. Seems like a tempest in a teapot to me.

Ditto that, Les

Or, another thought: maybe those who are having these issues aren't acting "proper".
IMHO, these closings are usually easier with the LO (usually) in the same locale.
However, I always behave as if I were an invited guest (until they get to know me, and once comfortable with me, then they show me where to make copies, fax, etc.)
Sometimes the employees of such banks might act a little territorial, but that doesn't bother me. It is their territory, not mine, and I go with the flow, and let them "boss me around", if their little egos need it.
I don't know how the others with the issues acted/reacted.
I generally refuse to get bent out of shape, and if necessary, I am on the phone with the hiring party for advice in how to proceed.
I certainly wouldn't fight for docs, or call the cops.
If they grabbed them from me, no fight...just a phone call to notify the hiring party of what is or has transpired.
JMHO

Double-ditto

Misty - love the territorial folks the best. People can power-trip off the most mundane things - paper clips, copier codes, whatever. I can 'give' them their power and their paper clips without costing myself or my job one bit.

I've surprised quite a few bank branches with closings they'd never been told about - had a couple that were a little miffed & territorial, but never had it amount to anything. The branch manager and I will go off in private (which sometimes needs to be initiated by me, the whole idea of acting like we're all grown up and not talking in front of THEIR customer), I'll get him/her hooked up with the L.O's branch and let THEM figure out who dropped the ball - and I move on to take care of THEIR shared customer, who is obviously local to THEIR branch. Sometimes, things just need to be spelled out.

I have done many closings in the banks. I never had any issues. In fact i was always treated with respect. The only thing that always bothers me is, once the BO and I situated at the table, some one comes in and wants to rob the bank and thinks I am one of the employees. I am not kidding. I have this phobia.

Re: HP, DUCK AND COVER!

Oh wow! I'm old enough and lived in the right place (Washington DC area) at the time to remember the Air Raid drills in school. When the alarm went off, we were lead to the basement of the building and had to "duck and cover". I always felt silly and to this day I think it was a waste of time. If a bomb had been dropped, we'd have at least been buried underneath the school building or been blown to dust. My husband, who grew up in South Dakota never heard of air raid drills.

I had one yesterday at a branch office. This was first time for them having a closing there. They didn't know the procedure. Wanted to keep the docs and give me copies. Once I told them that I needed the originals to send back to title company they were perplexed but, let me have them.
The thing is that if they think that you are just a notary then they feel why if you notarized now you are taking this package?

I don't think that fear of bank signings is justified.

Bizarre things happen in this business. It's usually the exception & not the rule.
I've done many signings at bank branch offices & never had any issues. I was always treated with great respect. IMO, it's up to the LO to prepare the borrower that a NSA witness closer is being used.

I like closings at the bank

the environment is very professional and a neutral place - thus it is clean, there are no pets rubbing up against my leg or jumping in my lap, no shady neighborhoods to travel to...
My experiences have always been good and sometimes the loan officer is there on hand to make the borrower comfortable and answer any questions they may have.

Re: I like closings at the bank

That's been my experience, too. Also, whenever the LO is in attendance or in the vicinity, I make a point of saying something nice about them to the borrower, e.g. that they're fortunate to have the "expert" available so close at hand if there are any questions. A little of puffing up those egos can go a long way, as long as it isn't overdone and doesn't come across as insincere.
