Diary of a notary
Monday I get a call early afternoon from a TC to be at a signing at 5 p.m. I confirm (VM) and when I get to the house, the borrowers are steamin' mad. "Are you the notary who stood us up Friday. We took off work and waited all day for you!" Sorry, no, wasn't me. (Not sure they believed it). Now, either the LO told them a notary was coming when in fact the LO knew nothing. The lender forgot to tell escrow an appt. was set; escrow called the borrower, then forgot to schedule a notary; or a notary did in fact stand them up. Who knows, but title certainly didn't tell me I was walking into a lion's den.
Tuesday, same TC tells me to be at the bank precisely at 2 p.m. to meet with borrower and LO. Get to bank early, employees get me set up at some exile desk where I cool my heels until 2:30. I ask for this alleged LO - who is nowhere to be seen and nobody know where she is. I look on loan app for borrower's phone number, call, and she says appt. is at 3 p.m. and she'll get there ASAP, which turned out to be 3 p.m. LO never did appear. Sidebar: at one point borrower put her feet up on the desk and proceeded to read the 4506T! Seriously.
Tonight I get a call at 6 pm! from a SS for a "must sign tonight" job. Confirmation states: Signing location: ABC Street, city and state. Call borrower and say OK, I'll be at this address at such and such time. Oh, no, that's our rental. Our home is XYZ Street, different city.
Yikes! These are just the highlights. And it's only Wednesday! But as was mentioned here yesterday, no matter what, it's better than being stuffed in some grey cubicle workin' for the man.

I had a few BO tell me their notary didn't show up. They were pretty nice about it but I assure them I wasnt the original notary.

Unfortunately, the notary takes the bullet most of the time. Loan officer forgets to schedule the closing with the title company? Blame a notary for a no show. Title company or signing service forgets to set up the appointment? Blame a notary for a no show. Easier than admitting they screwed up. When I ask the borrower if they ever heard from a notary to confirm the appointment, or verify the location, or ask to have I.D. copies ready and they say they never heard from anyone, I have a pretty good idea that no one was scheduled in the first place. I think our profession gets a bum rap way more than is deserved.

Yikes!
I had one last night where the wife kept getting up and down from table during the appt and at one point made a comment about how long it was taking (pkg was approx 125 pages). I was hurrying them through as best as I could. They had asked me to call right before I got there, so they could put their three huge dogs away, because "they jump on people". No problem, much appreciated. So then during appt, the wife lets them out because they are whining, and of course they all rush out and immediately jump on me and slobber on my clothes!!!!

GoldGirl/CA, a great title for a future book?

This would be a good read for anyone new getting into this business. That is why I jokingly say these days we need to be "certifiable" to be in this biz, not certified. LOL
