Good portable printer deal coming up

If you've been in the market for a compact laser printer that is suitable for travel... starting this weekend, Office Depot will be selling the Brother HL-2140 for $49.99. Good the 22nd-28th. It's not the wireless version, though... so You'd need to carry a cable, too, but that's not so bad considering the price.

That's a good price, but how much will the cartridges cost and how many pages per cartridge?

This is about a compact printer, not a workhorse.

$49.95 for the cartridge - 1,500 pages at 5% coverage...so I would say, around 250 pages like we print.

This would not be suitable for a signing agent's main printer.

But, if you re-charge the cartridges, or buy knock-offs, this will make a very good 2nd printer...or one for someone not in the SA biz.

Exactly... this is not suitable as a primary...

As I mentioned, it is suitable as a portable printer, for those times when you need to print on the road or something similar. I would never consider this as a primary, it just can't handle that kind of work.

If you use the toner save mode, fill your own cartridges, etc., the cost isn't that high to maintain this, especially if it's an occasional printer.

Definitely do NOT get this if you need a primary workhorse... you'll be upset if you do. It's just that many of us have second, third and even fourth printers for multiple jobs and as a backup or for travel. I carry one of these for travel. I don't use it everyday by any means... it mostly comes in handy with my general notary work with people who need to print 1-5 pages worth of stuff.

Re: $29.99toner/$49.99drum at LDProducts

If you want/need the wireless version, look for the 2140( wired version) to come up on sale, sometimes as low as $35 after rebate and you will have a spare original equipment toner cartridge AND original equipment drum roller for $49 or less. Staples has many different REFURB Brother laser printers over time (stock varies). Do not be afraid of Refurb Brother printers as they USUALLY carry FULL manufacturers 1 year warranty, even if OD, OM, Staples say 90 days on their site. Box says different. Of course YMMV, but that is my personal experience. Oh, toner cart. that comes with these printers may be "starter load" (partial fill) but are full load refillable. I don't remember on this model. It's a shill game I think HP started.
