I love general notary work, but sometimes....

It just breaks your heart!

I have an older couple who calls me every year to do a notarization for them. Last year, when the time came, I found out the husband was in a local nursing home, he had caught a bad cold on top of the other health problems he has and the doctors wanted him watched. While I was there he had asked his wife when the doctors thought he would be released, and she had said soon.

Today I get a call from her to notarize some POAs and find out he is still there!
This couple is the most adorable couple you ever want to meet! Imagine a cross between Stephen Hawking and Einstein for him and Mrs. Claus for her!

Although he was his normal bright self, and knowing she could not care for him herself, it just breaks my heart to know that he was still there!

Yes, it can tug at the heartstrings, but it is also rewarding to know you're doing something to help them.
I did a POA signing a few weeks ago for a wife that had a brain tumor. I ran into a relative (who was there as witness) the other day. She thanked me again for helping the family.
Her sister-in-law has deteriorated a lot since then, but the family really appreciated someone coming to the home to help them when they really needed it. I'm very aware that there is often a very small window of time to get POA's signed.
I always feel it's "angel duty" to be involved in some small way in these situations.

I may not be acting in that capacity but I have a side thing where my lab is a certified therapy dog and we do visits in the nursing and personal care homes. Sad when I go in there sometimes...a dear friend of mine which was also my next door neighbor passed away a couple of days ago. We used to sit with her and her husband when I did therapy visits. Her and her husband were married 59 years ago and now he will be lost without her. I'll truly miss her.
