Re: Message for those of you who want to make changes in your
Hi GZ...the site says, "This non-profit website..."
Have you established, or are you going to establish, a non-profit entity with the State of AZ?
I'm just curious. That term is pretty potent. As a writer myself, I would probably use another way of saying that I was not charging IF the website were not going to be the property of a non-profit entity.
What will you offer that cannot be gained at NR?
I think this will be at cross-purpose with NR's policies.
Here's why. I think like a web marketer. And, I guess that you do, as well. Love it!
And, you don't show any signs of scaling back any time soon.
Say I wanted to start a for profit notary database in time...because I know it takes time.
I would start with a subtle, non-threatening "complimentary" site to draw the membership off of NR and to my site for a specific purpose such as you have.
I would collect email addresses and I would eventually advertise my RM Notebook to them, plus the next enterprise I start, plus have a good start on a notary database that could also provide a profit after a year or two.
You should have asked Harry about posting this one time, out of respect...that's what PaulAW and I have always done to kick off an ad about our latest wares.
You should put it in your profile and refer notaries to it if asked about it.
If you are allowed to do this, watch me start a campaign and create a business real quick to profit from it. (Wink! Not really, but many will).

I've been thinking the same thing about this endeavor. It reminds me of Linda & her husband, too.

Re: Message for those of you who want to make changes in your
I just wanted to get the message across that there will be no profit to be gained from this website, not now, not ever. As I explained before, I am only doing this to provide a venue for one purpose only, and that is a place where notaries can gather information, discuss on the telephone or by email the changes that they would like to make in their own states. The only email address I am interested in are those of the state leaders who will be receiving forwarded mail from me. Any inquiries that come in will be sent to the leaders of that state.
My involvement is to direct the traffic so to speak, and to maintain the website. I certainly hope that this, like a lot of other things on Notary Rotary does not turn into a "I know better than you do" and you are so stupid you should be run out of Dodge. I get a LOT of PMs after I post something on the forum which ruffles a few feathers. Every one of them say something to the effect that the sender is afraid to post in the forum but wanted to let me know they agreed with something I posted. Why should people be so afraid of being questioned and ridiculed that they do not get to take advantage of the benefits they may derive from this forum.
What you would do and what I do are 2 different things. I only started doing this to help out Lavergne in Alabama who has been working long and hard to change things in his state without much help from anyone. When I saw the need I jumped in to fill the need.
And with regards to Harry, I do not know Harry and I figured that if my post was not acceptable he or someone would have deleted it. So I am grateful that it was allowed to stay. The more notaries know that they can have an online highway taking them directly to other people in their state for the purpose of uniting forces, the better off we will all be.
So, if I am not absolutely correct in my terminology, please forgive me. Send me some advice but don't try to spend my valuable time reading a two faced critique of my innocent attempts at trying to do something that make me feel good about helping someone else.
I don't have the time to spend everyday on Notary Rotary and really do take advantage what it has to offer, but quite frankly I get really tired of seeing how simple statements are an excuse for people to berate others and get some heated arguments going.
So Brenda, if you are willing to jump into the pool with your wisdom and experience help these folk out who are trying their best to change things in their state, give me a call cause I sure could use your help.

Wow....
I wanted to come to Bren's defense until I realized after all that she's done over the years in this forum...she doesn't need defending.

GZ, what I should have said...
was, "Take a look at Msg #129805." And, then you would not have felt that my direct approach was an attack.
It was not meant to be. And, I am definitely not offended by your response!
I gave you an example of why it might not be welcomed because you said you hoped that he would allow it to be posted on occasion.
I really thought that you would understand what I was saying and why, since you run a successful business that is based largely on an online presence...and, it stands to reason that email marketing, among other things, is one of the tools that assures visits to the site.
If this is allowed to stay and be repeated (and, it might be!) you can bet there are ten entreprenurial notaries who will attempt to promote a seemingly innocuous site to notaries (who tend to sign up a lot) and begin to use that site to develop a database of their own for various purposes.
Msg #129805 is one situation that apparently really got under Harry & Co.'s skin. It comes to mind that more recently LauraV posted something about a discount buying co-op for notaries that she was starting for altruistic purposes, so she said, and Harry took it down.
Somewhere in between those was the great lifting of nearly the entire notary database by principals of a site that remains successful today. And, there was the SS owner who kept telling notaries to go to his new "meltdown" site and post information about SSs that were out of business. He said he only wanted to help notaries stay away from the bad guys, and it was free.
The site was posted here, notaries visited it, the site was collecting emails...notaries had to submit their email when they posted their bad SS info, and it was also a way for this SS owner to find out what SSs went under and try to get their client base. Harry put a stop to that. He, like the others, got pretty angry when Harry removed it.
And, in addition to the above there have been too many to remember. All of the above, by the way, claim their innocence to this day against Harry's conclusion that they were using his site to gain financially or materially for an enterprise of their own.
I truly was just giving you an example of why this might be determined at cross-purposes to NR.
And, as I tried to convey, I am always aware of how to create opportunity for myself while doing well for others.
Charitable work is good for the soul. However, I am very honest with myself when I do charitable administrative work or produce a media product. I do look to dovetail my donated work toward another goal that expands my landscape in some fashion.
That's me. I'm that person who uses volunteer opportunities that involve administrative or website work for "selfish" reasons, and I'm sure not embarrassed to say it. In fact, I like to be very clear on it.
Good luck with your endeavor. And, to the notaries who decide to get involved.

Re: GZ, what I should have said...
Brenda, I just finished reading your post to me and wasn't sure whether or not to send a PM or post publicly. I just decided to post publicly to completely clear the air.
When I read your first post I was very angry. I have put some amount of thought, work and personal funds into trying to help this very nice man from Alabama and then to expand that endeavor to help other notaries attempting to make changes. I am not a person who operates on selfish motivation. If I choose an endeavor to make money then I work hard at it and am not ashamed to let everyone know that I am there to succeed.
However, if I choose an endeavor that is for someone elses benefit there is no hidden agenda with me. With regard to this website, it is there for any notaries who want to use it. If I determine that it is not being used then I will shut it down. It won't be turned into something else and it will never become anything other than what we set out to do.
So, after reading the previous posts you referenced, I understand where you were coming from and apologize for my outburst. I am a very passionate person and do not back down from what I perceive as an attack on me or mine. Please accept my humble apology for misinterpreting your message and I look forward to having your support and friendship.

Re: GZ, what I should have said...
Actually, no apology is needed. I realized pretty quickly that you were upset and I stopped reading, to write and explain in a better way.
I was on my way out to a meeting and I was too quick in my reply.
Earlier, I posted the Uniform Law on Notary Acts that has recently been approved, and is "supposed to be" promoted outward from the UL commissioners representing the state. It's a very complete notary act that covers almost everything the people on your site seek. Several years ago (1982) an act was adopted and it was put into law by several states after recommendation by one of their UCLs.
I wonder if it would not almost be easier for notaries who seek change to use that as an example of what a good, thorough notary law should be and get supporters to recommend adoption. After all, an "authority" is promoting a piece of legal work that has been being created and refined since 2006. "Authorities" usually have a little more clout than a group of concerned citizens.
The Uniform Law Commission might also be willing to give guidance on getting such a law enacted. One of their stated duties, "to seek introduction and enactment of Uniform Acts promulgated by the Conference that are appropriate for their State;"
Furthermore, the ABA (American Bankers Assn.) was instrumental in overseeing the creation and refinement of the act. They wanted to get this done so that it would be more efficient to do business across state lines (in a perfect world!). They have a lot of clout and are behind the well-written notary law act.
In a letter on one of the sites listed below, the ABA says: "... if properly drafted, a revised law can reduce compliance costs and promote efficiency..." And, there you have one good reason for change as stated by a huge authority on why this should go forward.
ABA remarks regarding notary training: "At the same time, the imposition of such requirements will be a significant change in many states. Due to budget or funding issues, these states might understandably be reluctant to initiate new requirements and programs."
Their website: http://www.nccusl.org/Update/ ABA letter: http://www.law.upenn.edu/bll/archives/ulc/ulona/2009nov16_aba.pdf The new act: http://www.law.upenn.edu/bll/archives/ulc/ulona/2010am_approved.htm Find each state's commissioners: http://www.nccusl.org/Update/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=2&tabid=16 The notary section of the site: http://www.nccusl.org/Update/CommitteeSearchResults.aspx?committee=304
That is the route I would investigate. Just a thought.

For what it's worth, I didn't get this impression at all from Brenda's post and didn't think she was trying to berate you. Based on a long history here - and having read scads of "Brenda posts" over the years - I truly felt she was just trying to offer some useful perspective. And to my delight, this didn't end up in a heated argument. Guess there's hope for this board yet, no?! jmho

They need to put this board (firepower) in a drone send it anywhere in the world there's a problem. That would be my choice.
You don't have to be smart to be a notary but a smart notary is a very lethal weapon. IMO
