1 Hour?

Got a call from a signing agency who seemed miffed that I didn't want to take an appointments an hour apart from one I already had. Now while some notary work may not take more then an hour you still have to factor in travel time and this happened to be a full loan not just one document. Quickest I've been able to get done with one of those is 45 minutes. Even if it's in the same town it could take me 30-45 minutes just to get through traffic depending on where appointment #2 is which would give me 15 minutes to do a loan signing. I asked for 2 hours and I was treated like some sort of idiot. Needless to say, they didn't call back. SHOCKER!

That's my holiday fun for the day.

How about you?

Many notaries don't say no to appts. due to time, and schedule them accordingly with the borrowers. I don't do that or recommend it. I do always counter with "I can do it at 5:30 instead of 5:00". Most times they will let me call the borrowers to see if they are flexible with the time. It doesn't always work out, but at least I didn't just turn the signing away to the competition.

Here is what Ive learned in 5 yrs doing this. Everyone wants their loan closed between 5 and 7. I live in a very rural area so realistically, making it to 2 appts that are scheduled at say 5 and 6 pm will not work with the travel.
What I tell the companies is I will go to the closing as soon as I can after the other appt giving them an estimate of time. I also offer that I will call the borrowers and let them know that this is what Im doing and make sure it is ok with them. I also let the company know this is contingent on when I get the docs for the closing.
It has been my experience some companies will let you do this and some wont. Almost always, the borrower is fine with it.

Re: 1 Hour? Ditto, but also

a Lot of borrowers don't even set the signing time (about 60% of my experience) they are told that. Adjust ments can usually be made with the borrowers, they just want to get it over and done with.

Agreed. Many times I call to confirm an appointment and the borrowers tell me their lender set the appointment without any input from them and that the time set is inconvenient for them. Lateley I have been getting a number of "open time" appointments.

Agree with JD. While it's nice to ask the hiring agency if you can have some flexibility and hope they respond favorably, often they don't cos they don't want to take the chance they'll hear something back from their hiring agency. Ultimately, this is really about what the borrowers want, not the SS, not the lender, not the TC, not the LO or the Realtor - all of whom seem to have their own agenda ($$$), and a simple call to the borrower will determine that, yes, they need that exact time or more likely, "that's the time they told me, doesn't matter to me" or occasionally, "thank gawd you can come later, I thought I had to have that time" or "thank gawd you called, I need to change the time/day." You just never know. Then throw in late docs and anything can happen. I just generally say yes to everything if we're talking about an hour or two difference and work it out with the borrowers. I really can't think of a time where the borrowers weren't fine with things. Like JD said, they just want to get it done.

Last night BWR (7:30 PM appt scheduled) called and asked if I could come early (6:30 pm) 'cause it was late. I think the LO/SS probably wanted to make sure the were gone for the evening.

Nice to know how you all deal with that. I guess I was more taken aback by how irked the SS person sounded when I asked if we could move it an extra hour out. I was right on there. The signing today lasted almost an hour and I would have never made it to #2 at the time they wanted. Oh well you win some, you lose some.

Isnt that something how they dont seem to understand the traveling that is involved. I have run into that also. The only thing I can figure is they live in a city where traveling is 15-20 minutes each way to the edge of the city and they have no concept of rural traveling or traveling from town to town.
I have lost count of how many closings I have lost because the comp wouldnt let me work it out with the borrowers.
A note to all the newbies in this biz that are rural, the glorious vision given by some certain organizations that you will be doing 5-6 closings in one day, is very unrealistic.
