Jail notarizations.
I had a wierd & frustratiang experience the other day. I got a call from a relative of someone who was incarcerated. They needed to get a POA to handle banking & financial affairs. Our local sheriff's office was supposed to have the paperwork at the front desk. When I called in inquire about what I needed to know to handle this, first I was passed to 3 or 4 other people, only to find out that they have a notary who is the only one allowed to go over to the jail for notarizations. It was Friday & he doesn't work Friday. That meant that the relative would have to stay in town until Monday to get this done. I left them a v/m, expressing the frustration with the system they're using. Our local city (serves as the county) offices close at 1 pm on Friday's, and you can't get a deed recorded after that time either. Must me nice.......just shut down public offices & not make them available. Grrrrrr!

Marilynn, I had a similar call a couple of years ago - a woman's daughter was in jail and her car was racking up impound charges. The mother needed POA in order to get the car out of impound, and she called me because she was not getting cooperation from the jail for this notarization.
When I called the jail to inquire about the procedure, I was told in no uncertain terms that I would not be allowed a contact visit with the inmate, that they have their own officers that are notaries, and basically they would get to it when they were darn good and ready.
Moral of the story: don't get yourself incarcerated.

That was what I was told here not so long ago
If the inmate is in the detention center (the "temporary" holding place I guess) I can get in there; however in the correction center where they get transferred to they have their own notary - IOW no I was not welcome to come there...they were polite but very firm about it.
My lady finally found a bail bondsman who said he could go in and help her.

they probably close early due to either shortage in staff OR
cutting back to alleviate an already strained budget....as a former state gov't worker, we were offered rather ordered to take a few unpaid furlough days....but never was an office closed. Maybe the office is so small that closing it made more sense than offering unpaid furlough days...who knows...but that's my .02 cents.
and this time of year is the worst time IMO, to get anything like that done...lots of folks on vacations...even gov't workers folk...

No point to make excuses for them, Cari. If there are four
people who's only job is to transfer my call to someone else, what does that tell you?

Re: No point to make excuses for them, Cari. If there are four
..It could be telling you they are employing blind, disabled people, people with learning disabilities, veterans with all kinds of re-adjustment problems with jobs they are suited for. That's what's happening here.
