National Notary Association

I have a title company that pays me well and the lender they use is requiring all notaries to sign up with NNA. I see $99.00 fee for the test and background check. Did any of you do that method and pass the test okay without their online study course?
Thanks !

I would only do so if they agreed to pay for it.

I'd bet it's not a lender requirement - more like TC req.. n/m

No way!

I am not an employee of the title company nor the lender. Therefore they cannot dictate what organizations I must join.

Why are they requiring NNA membership? If you don't know, ask. Then let us all know what their expectations are from being members.

Will you, please, post or PM the name of the lender? As PAW stated, "No way".

Sounds like they are requiring a Certified Signing Agent designation. I've had several signing services say they required it, but this is the first time I've heard of it being a lender requirement. I'm not sure I'd outright refuse, but I would ask why and will they accept other designations as well. I signed up because I wanted to see just what was covered.

In answer to your question Kathryn, I did sign up and take the test at the $99 level. The test is fairly easy, so I'm not sure why anyone would think it's such a big deal. Took me about thirty minutes and that's while I was watching the news as well...

One thing I'll say for the NNA, they do a heckuva job of separating us from our money for little or no reason.

This is exactly the point that many of us try to get across. Taking and passing their test (open book too!) does not make a signing agent "certified". As has been pointed out previously, you don't even have to be a notary to become "certified" as a signing agent. IMO, if you are 'certified' in a skill or discipline, you have accumulated some level of experience. But, as you duly noted, the NNA doesn't care about experience, except for experiencing separating a notary from his money.

This is true... in FACT...

Their background check doesn't even verify your notary commission. You can take the "class" and pass the test without even being a commissioned notary, and I know of several people who did this... they became certified and background screened through the NNA months before they received their notary commissions.

I'm confused. In another post, you are talking about the

"Notary of the Year", which is another one of their marketing/promo things. I've met one of them, a gal from MD, who does conferences & pushes the NNA agenda. Enough said????

Re: I'm confused. In another post, you are talking about the

That's what I meant, though... what I was saying is that they should have a pool of notaries to choose from that WON'T push their agenda, or be afraid to challenge to them. The average NNA member, will, of course, promote whatever the NNA wants...because that's what they know.

The reason I brought up the NOTYs was because I believe a true NOTY probably is not going to be found among the NNA rank and file.

Well... I know that's true. My post about that above was meant to have us try to get some notaries in that pool who wouldn't be afraid to at least try.

Test/NNA

I'm a new notary so I did take the NNA test and do all their stuff. I took (and passed) the test before I even received the study guide/book. FWIW, I also passed it before I had a clue what I was doing. Smile

I won't be renewing next year.

As previously stated, there is no such classification in CA.

The NNA is selling snake oil. The Secretary of State does not recognize this classification.

No SOS that I'm aware of recognizes any type of Notary certification beyond the initial commission. It's an industry association that issues and promotes it to the "Consumers" of the industry... and they do it very well.
