just starting the mobile biz- need advice
I'm just starting to do mobile notary. I've done in-store notary for 10 years. What will I need to have to begin? ( for Wisconsin & Illinois) There's a lot of 'stuff' out there for sale! I've got the bond, stamp, application in process.
Specifically, do I need to have a designated fax line? a laser printer? a scanner? log books, etc?
Id appreciate any advice you're willing to give, too. Thanks

I can't say specific to your area, but I needed my bond, stamp, laser printer that prints legal and letter, scanner (for my online fax service, myfax.com), a journal, check safe black and blue pens, business cards and a background check. In addition, I started a website, became NNA certified (not for everyone), created listings here and at other sites, ordered flyers and postcards.

I'm confused...(what else is new)
You say "I've done in-store notary for 10 years. "
Then you say you have your bond, stamp and application in process.
How long have you NOT been a notary - are you allowed to be dual-commissioned? And what do you plan to do once you get your commission (if you don't already have it) - general notary work only? Then all you need are your basic notary supplies and wheels. If you're going to do loan signings, you'll need to worry about the fax, printer, scanner, etc etc...And do you have loan signing experience? If not you'll need training in mortgage signings so you don't end up pulling something like the previous poster spoke about - the notary that sent the package back with no notarizations.
Like I said...I'm confused...

ROTFLO! No he/she did not send the package back with no notarization. The company was probably a low-baller and figure they can just assign a regular Notary to conduct the closing for next to nothing. That serves them well.

I have not done MOBILE notary. I am a 10 year notary from a pack & ship store. (I have done loan signings,& general notary out of the store) I won't have a location as of 1/1/2011. Yes, you can be a notary in multiple states. I'm applying for the certification for the nearby state because I'm close to the border of 2 states.
Just looking for start up advice.... are there any software programs/ services that I should be aware of?

BUG, Try this
Use this link to find Msg #33325 It is a Great place to start. Read the entire thread because additional advice has been added over time.
I placed the link here just in case you aren't aware of the Orange Search button. You can put message number (numbers only) and change the search from "topics" to "individual messages" when you know the number.
You might also try searching for marketing ideas and other topics via the search button.
Did you mean you are applying for your "commission" in the other state or becoming a "certified" SA (signing agent)?
Certification, as in becoming a certified notary signing agent, is not all that it is cracked up to be (see some of the posts within the last 24 hours and via search). I think you will find that most find it a waste of money at best and a scam to separate you from your money at worst.
Good Luck!
