laptop question
My little sister got a gift(laptop) it is an Augen android netbook. It turn on but, you see the desktop with no icons at all. We were on phone trying to reach the techs all day no answer maybe because of holidays. Have any of you had this experience? Could this be something that tech would tell you what to do to get the applications or is this just something where they missed installing applications at factory?

Click on "start" and see if "all programs" comes up. If it does, click on all programs and that may tell you what is loaded on the laptop. If there's nothing there, them it probably has nothing loaded. If this latter is the case, you may consider asking gift-giver if anything was supposed to be loaded.
Good luck!

It doesn't even have that. It is just a blank screen except for the logo on it. I think it was just made and nothing installed. Strange

This is actually little more than a toy
Here is an article on it.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/27/augens-99-genbook-smartbook-preview/
It uses the Android operating system 1.6 with newer ones using 2.1 which runs on mobile phones with a processors that runs at 1 ghz+ processing speed. This thing uses a 400 mhz (less than half) processor and, according to the couple of reviews I scanned, is not up to the task. It won't run any useful computing programs, if that is your goal. Plus a great many of them are faulty and just don't work, and that could be the case with the one you have.
Personally, I would take it back and put the money toward a name brand netbook running windows and with at least the 1.6 gig Intel Atom processor if you want your sister to learn real world computing.

Did you get the install disks? If you did try reinstalling the system. Some manufactures do not include the system disks, they have the user make the restore disks themselves.

It dosn't sound like it came with an operating system.
Sometimes, if it came from a re-seller who isn't licensed to sell, for instance, Windows, the buyer has to buy it and install.
On the box it should say something like "Intel Inside" and "Windows Vista Home Edition" or something like that. If not, you'll need to go buy your OS.

Re: It dosn't sound like it came with an operating system.
This was bought by my mother and given as a gift to my little sister. Mother knows nothing about laptops or pc's at all. I have suggested she return it and get her money back. This was bought at a store. Came with no installation cd's at all.

That's a big clue right there - no cd and no instructions to
make the back-ups.
I'm with you, return for refund (and a wag-of-the-finger to the jerk that sold it to her knowing it was for your little sister.)
