ARGH: Need Help With Virus Aftermath

Our main house computer running XP sp3 was infected with the dreaded XP Antispyware 2010 bug. Was able to remove the %$*&ing thing using Malwarebytes from a CD (a great suggestion from a previous NotRot discussion). Ran 2 full scans with both Malwarebytes and Avira with no futher findings. Ccleaner was also used.

Our issue is that nothing runs under the userID that was hit with the bug. I can use a different ID and all seems to work fine. When I try to launch a program under the infected userID I get a RUN ON screen asking if I want to run the program with that userID or as the administrator.

This goes beyond the scope of my technical knowledge. Any suggestions are very much appreciated. And I thought I was going to have a relexing weekend.

"relexing weekend."

I think this is going to be a "flexing" week-end for you Rick. I don't have any advice, I wish I did. I'm just trying to help you keep your humor in a humorousless situation. You have my prayers someone will answer correctly.

I saw that too and called myself a bonehead.

Thanks for the chuckle

Maybe Staples

Yes maybe taking your computer to Staples can help removing the virus
Of course takes about 3 days for them to clean it completely
Another option is calling Guru guys, if there are in your city, they can look up your computer at home,
I know, I am sorry, cost money.

And for last option, if you know how to do it is backing all the files you think are necessary and reset your computer to factory settings. This option erases all files, everything from your computer and will be like you just bought it.

Sorry to hear that, good luck. My suggestion would be to see if you can go back to your last Restoration point (the last time you felt your computer was running properly). Second I would determine if and when you last backed-up your computer and if you're willing to re-install any programs you may have added. take your computer to a computer repair shop, I would stay away from Home depot, etc. It will cost you about 1/2 if you get a complete Restoration ( around $100.00 ) If they restore your computer to it's original setting. More if you want them to save all your Data (that's why it takes longer). Original settings, you should be able to wait for it. That's what I did when my computer was infected. I did not want to lose any business.

HOME DEPOT???

James, I want to get the desktop back not build it a shed! No worries I know what you meant.

Apparently something I did wiped out the restore points, as there is only one and it was after the attack. No need to restore to that point.

We have the files backed up, just wanted to see if there was any thing I try prior to reinstalling everything.

What a PITA!!! I'm off to go to visit with mom and dad in the Bay Area - no shortage of frustration for me today!

Sorry again, if it wasn't for the holiday, I could refer you so someone in Berkeley who could have you up and running again in about two hours. Father and son operation, very good.

The Bay Area will be celebrating today. Larry Ellison's yacht just won the America's Cup!

Did you try running it under both the user ID and admin? Other then running it both ways, I think the only thing you can do is delete that ID and start a new one.
