Sad of the day
I got an email from nice semi-retired guy a few hours south of me who needs part time work.
He says: "I'm still sitting by my phone hoping for a call from C~. Hope all is going well with you. Warm regards, B~"
Parts of what I replied: "I suggest you be proactive with C~ about getting on [board]. I think there is far more competition this year than last since unemployment numbers are up."
"If I wanted a [work from C~] right now I would drive to [Ztown] - just show up and make a friend or two by helping with paper for free if they would let me. And..... That's a [multiple] hour one way drive for me and I would still do it."
Part of his final email to me: "Thanks for the advice Laura. Guess I'm just lazy. Since I grew up in an era when there were more jobs than people to fill them, almost every job I ever held came looking for me. Now I'm basically retired and.... Don't think I'll drive to [Ztown] but I think your suggestion is good. At least I should probably give them a call and let them know I'm available."
I left things at that. A small attitude change would fix lots. But I only met him once and it's clear he knows what to do.
Sorry for the odd wording - I do it to protect privacy. The fellow is not a notary, just a very nice man who could use some extra income right now.
So I guess it is good that I am at the very tail end of the baby boomers and spent most of my life in a hugely populated state: Calif. My thinking for school then work has been "always be your best and work super hard because your competition is definitely more experienced than you because if only because she is older."
Lucky me - I am VERY practiced at working hard! LOL

Your right Ilene, but unfortunately the "me" generation expects the government to provide for them. Most of the people that I get around like this man seem to have this philosophy: I want it, therefore I should have it, and if it isn't offered by someone, the government should provide it. They certainly shouldn't have to work to provide it for themselves. He gets very little sympathy coming from me, what he needs is a swift kick in the rear-end and told the facts of life, it isn't fair and you have to put forth the effort in order to get any of the results that you are looking for.
It took me 8 months to find the job I currently have and now I've been cut back to 8-12 hours a week, so I'm out looking for another job, especially since so many TC's & SS's have become great rip-off artists (you can't even count on the ones you've worked with for almost a decade). I'm not sitting around on my rear hoping something changes, you have to put forth some effort to make the changes. When this guy hits the bottom he should get off his rear and do something for himself, but then again from what Laura wrote he probably won't.
