Copy of Notary Drivers License

Why does a signing company need a copy of your id for their records.

I guess I got the same email from the ss in CA. I've never been willing to give them a copy of my ID, even though I really don't see the harm in it. We're subcontracting for them so why shouldn't they want to have an ID on file?

I am also unwilling to do this. Maybe a passport? A loan I did recently had a document called Notary Verification and was asking for Notary DL#, and a secondar ID, like Property Parcel #, SSN... I did not give out this info. I am not the one applying for the loan! I don't mind to submit my notary commission info and proof, but not my personal identity.

Whats the difference

between a passport and a DL in your mind? They both have your pictures, they both have numbers and they both are valid forms of ID. As far as the documents that want my DL, I just leave that blank. They only need my notary commission # and then they can call my SOS if need be. I don't run across that very often.

Re: Whats the difference

I just thought identity theft would be easier with a DL #. If I do send it, I'll black out my #.

It probably makes them feel better about your identy, although it proves nothing IMHO. I never had a problem with it, although I don't know how this verifies that you are who you say you are. Unless someone has seen you in person, there is no way to verify that the picture on your DL is really you. I would think a copy of your state notary commission would be more important. . What's the difference between that and showing it at the grocery story? Just black out your DL#.

Thanks for the responses, I will send them my notary commission and will think about sending them a copy of my drivers license.

I will show it for ID purposes, but I do not let them copy down the DL#. They don't need it for any reason. Besides that, FL has some pretty strict 'rules' and statutes concerning the DL#. Specifically ยง119.0712 states in part: "Personal information, including highly restricted personal information as defined in 18 U.S.C. s. 2725, contained in a motor vehicle record [ed. which includes driver's licenses] is confidential pursuant to the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act of 1994, 18 U.S.C. ss. 2721 et seq. Such information may be released only as authorized by that act;"

I got the email, too. I haven't even worked for that SS since 2008 (they like to pay lower than what I charge). I'm not sending it.

I got the email, too. They've always met my fee in the past, but I do wonder about the ID. The commission I understand, but what does the ID have to do with anything?

I don't comply, they don't need it. I just tell them I make so much money doing this job that I have a limo on standby at my becon call.

I do not provide that info. I have also refused to fill a W-9 unless they assure me I'll make over the amount necessary for me to meet that requirement. Yea, I loose some opportunities.

James, W9 should be sent if requested, their is not a

min for them to request. If they contract with you period they are allowed to request it.

Get an EIN and use it.

Thanks Jim....allowed/required for me it makes a difference. I'm not sure if I will renew my commission since I may be taking on another skill set...Appraisals.

W-9...if you refuse to give that to them...

you could potentially get a letter from the IRS informing you that in the future you will be subject to backup withholding of 28% due to your refusal to fill out a W-9. If you look at a W-9 form, you'll actually see that on the form instructions. Personally, I wouldn't want that to happen.

Misunderstanding. I've done no work for people, then refused to fill out the form.

I'll show them mine if they show me theirs. That way if they don't pay, I have their info to hand over to the collection agency Smile

I don't have a problem with it.

I'll just redact my DL number and let'em have it. Hell, they could go on publicdata.com and get everything that's on my DL but my pic, height, sex, and eye color anyway. LOL

Just block out everything.....

When I get a request for my driver's license - that they really don't need - I use post-its to just block out everything (photo, description and ID #) except my name and address. Then I take a photocopy of that and all they get is "California Driver License - my name and address - that's it.
