E-Mail

Has anyone received a E-mail from a Wiiliam Klein at professional settlements, claiming they got your profile on this website and would like to put you on their database. Sending a contract to sign and W-9.
Thanks

Contact info and who I am, yes
You get a W-9 and other personal info with info that can be used impropertly from me when I work for you.
By the way, IRS rules are that you need a W-9 when you have paid me more than $599.

>>> IRS rules are that you need a W-9 when you have paid me more than $599 <<<

I believe you are mistaken. By submitting a W-9, you are certifying that the tax id number you are providing is correct and accurate. You also need to certify whether or not you are subject to backup withholding. Most taxpayers are exempt from backup withholding. The IRS might require backup withholding, however, if your name and tax identification number that you provide on the W-9 don't match with the IRS records. An employer (even those who contract 1099 IC's) may legitimately ask for a W-9 before providing any work for the employee or IC. Many organizations, businesses and government agencies clearly indicate that independent contractors will not be set up for payment unless there is a W-9 and a completely signed agreement on file in Accounts Payable. And there are penalties for failure to furnish your TIN. If you fail to furnish your correct TIN to a requester, you are subject to a penalty of $50 for each such failure unless your failure is due to reasonable cause and not to willful neglect.

The "$600" rule is in regards to whether or not the employer is required to produce a 1099.

I only send a W-9 when work assignment is complete.

I don't like my personal information floating around, especially my social security number.

Thanks Linda, you are correct. It's on the top of my "to do" list this year. Either way, SS or EIN, I don't want information in wrong hands, especially if I haven't completed an assignment for the company requesting it. Smile

Just DO IT Barbara. Then sending W9 before appt. will not

make a difference. 5 minutes on irs.gov for peace of mind.

Re: I only send a W-9 when work assignment is complete.

BEEJ - you, and others of course, need to visit the IRS.gov site and get an EIN number to use instead of SS #. Will take about 5-10 mins to receive, and you will not have to use your SS# ever again to all these places.

Many of us here do just that. Makes one feel better. Search here for more info too.
