SS# requests

Just curious, why do some SS's send requests for an updated W-9 every year? Most of my major clients get it once and never ask for it again. I've been a victim of ID theft and am very reluctant to keep giving it up, especially to SS's I do not work with anymore.

I sure hope you're giving an EIN, and not your SSN!! n/m

I never ever give out my SSN to signing services or title companies - I use an EIN and that's the number they get.

I'm getting many requests for updated W-9's. It's tax time & they are preparing 1099's. If you're in business, there is no point to mailing to any address other than current.
As has already been pointed out, many notaries get an EIN so they don't have to give out personal SS #s.
IMO, either way, it is your responsibility to provide it to them.
