Re: The documents are in English n/a

I get this quite a lot and I understand the comfort level borrowers want in a transaction as important as purchasing a home. No matter whether they are Hispanic or Asian ( yes they sometimes do it too) the docs are in English. I personally think you should not be allowed to pick your notary based on what language the borrower feels comfortable with if the docs are in
English. I am black and I speak Spanish and some Mandarin and Cantonese....I
make the borrower feel comfortable and then proceed with the signing.....in
English. One of the things I have also noticed is that in the is area people who are by lingual charge more for their services and that not fair either. IMO

James, why is it fair to charge extra for signings after 5 pm or extra for signings with short notice but not fair to charge extra for a language other than English?

I think we provide a service at X cost and additional skills helps us to get the job done. Should I charge more to go into affluent neighborhoods because I am on the lower in of the economic scale yet can talk to the borrowers about bonds and, certificates of trust, Chicago Options, homeowner association bylaws and dominoes?

"...yet can talk to the borrowers about bonds and, certificates of trust, Chicago Options, homeowner association bylaws and dominoes?"

While it's wonderful that you can do all those things, they're not particularly relevant to what you are being hired for. Some additional skills, however, are very relevant to the assignment and make you more valuable. As you know, supply and demand controls fees that a company is willing to pay in any given situation. The more competition there is in any area, the easier it is for them to go down the line and just call someone else if someone's fees are more than they are interested in. But if they have a specific need, like a notary who speaks the language their borrowers request, that narrows the field considerably and makes that notary of more value to the hiring party.

I take your point about providing service and, realizing that it's the borrower who pays in the end, in most cases I try to limit any extra fee. But it's also often the case that these signings will take longer partly because the documents are in a language the person isn't comfortable with. And I have found a wide range of literacy among people who prefer a Spanish speaking notary. If the person works doing some kind of manual labor, they often are not as comfortable with paperwork and not infrequently, may even be unused to signing their name. Sometimes I have to write out the date on a piece of paper for them to copy. And filling in forms is another matter altogether.

Conversely, I've met with some very well educated Spanish speakers. I did one on Tuesday with an interesting, delightful older couple from Argentina. (His parents were Spanish and she was Italian... Wink) They hadn't requested a Spanish speaking notary and I'm sure would have gotten by fine in English, but when they found out I spoke Spanish, they were much more comfortable proceeding in Spanish. In that case, it was totally a matter of just providing the best service I was capable of, and the issue of an extra fee wasn't even considered. (I may have another one like that tomorrow.)

I think this is just another way for us to charge commensurate with our value to our client. jmho.

I'm just going to say this, it's relevant to establish a comfort level. JMO It works for me. I do not expect anyone to like/dislike what I do.

I have yet to see mortgage docs in spanish....and these need to be! The same for any other language that the BO speak as a first language. I think its fair for them.

This is an on-going problem in our country and personally I can care less. I have learned that the key to success ( for me) is following the rules. I'm certain that if I wanted to buy property in France, South Africa, Yemen or Spain the recordable documentation would be in English. NOT!
