"What's up with this ?"
Had a signing scheduled for this evening. No docs an hour before the closing. I called the signing company and they checked with lender and said this was not a go for today. At the signing time I thought, let me check with the borrower since I had confirmed the appt time and verify that they knew it was not happening this evening. When I called the borrower and asked if he knew the closing was not happening today, he responded the notary was there at that moment. My question is "what's up with this ? I called the signing company and they said that they tried to contact me to tell me the closing was not happening today. I never received the call on my cell. When I told them that a notary was at the closing now. They claimed they did not know.

The TC likely just went with another SS (probably a cheaper one), so the SS that assigned you was cancelled, and they cancelled you.

I have run into this scenario before. In my case it turned out that the party that hired me continued to shop it around to find a signing agent with lower fee. I was told the signing was cancelled, but like you when I called to notify the borrower...the borrower told me that they haf been contacted by the other signing agent, and that it was proceeding. In the interim I had turned away other signings that were a conflict in timing.
The next time I was contacted by the ss to schedule a signing I brought this to their attention. I requested that they remove me from their data base.

I had an experience similiar to Kevin's but with a strange twist. The TC or lender - not sure who - gave the assignment to two SS's. One SS contacted me, the other contacted another notary. Up to the appointed hour I'm begging for info and status on the docs. My SS was getting no answers so it was agreed I would call the borrower to keep them in the loop and to discover how much later we could continue and still be at the BO's convenience. The borrower told me they would be available until the job could be done. About 15 mins. later I got a call from another notary and she went on to tell me that she also had this assignment with a different agency, and was there with the paperwork.
About 2 weeks later, I got 2 calls, different agencies, "set your own appointment time". When I got the confirmations, they were for the same borrower, same loan number. That sure put me in a pickle.
The point is - it may not be the SS who contacted you - perhaps whoever hired them sent the info to 2 different agencies.

I suspect this happens often these days - more so than ever.
Some companies - and individuals - are still scrapping for every morsel they can, and some TCs are apparently taking advantage of the situation. Personally, I think it's a lousy way to do business. Very bad from a customer service point of view - for all concerned - but if they're fighting for survival, they may not care any longer. Just one more thing we have to contend with and look out for. I try not to dwell on it and just move on.

true...around the holidays, I must've gotten about 5
to 6 calls for last minute closings, and amazingly, 2 to 3 were for the same borrowers!
I turned most down, because of booking issues, but it was ridiculous how these SS were all contacted for the same closing!
I think TC's should stick to their best SS and stop fishing around the same goes for SS that do the same for NSA's, stick to the best nsa, you'll never get burned!

Same just happened to me...Called borrower, confirmed time 30 minutes later SS called me back and says, aah the borrower decided to get their own Notary. Hmmmm I shrugged it off, everyone is entitled to choose the notary they want, right? I can still smell the fish.

This type of action of the part of SS's sure does
make you lose all respect and trust for them - no matter HOW good they've been to you in the past.

Re: This type of action of the part of SS's sure does
One time I showed up for a closing to find that another notary was already there. She didn't have the hud though. I gave mine to her. Then later was scolded by the ss for leaving the hud. That was in the beginning of my career.

It may have been double booked. I've had that happen.
