I just received this same email!

Guess they're trying everyone on the forums and hoping to get someone, anyone, to follow through.

No -- Mainly because their grammar is unprofessional, but

All that information is available when they input a zip code here and a couple other places I am at. I have and would rather sit on the sidelines rather that work for those suggested fees.

I have been basically just doing general notary work rather than work for low ball fees. It still keeps beer in my fridge ...

Hook, line and sinker ....

Perhaps I am being too serious ...

This was an actual request for information from a real company?

Is this for real? Sounds like it was written by someone with just a minimum knowledge of English.

Maybe it's outsourced to India. Or maybe it's a scam to get personal information.

I was waiting for the part where the writer mention $40 million that he needed help getting out of his country...

"Sounds like it was written by someone with just a minimum knowledge of English."

Par for the course in California. You'd be amazed at how many people manage to pass state and professional exams who can barely write a sentence in English.

In fact, half of the adults in Los Angeles County are functionally illiterate. No joke!

"In fact, half of the adults in Los Angeles County are functionally illiterate. No joke!"

That's pretty sad. Is it due to a large immigrant population, or a lousy school system?

Both, I'm sure...

This is one of the remaining references I can find to the numbers... it was reported a few years ago but quickly swept under the rug....and few of the original articles remain online.

The sad thing is that many of those people are also functionally illiterate in their native language. Imagine putting a lot of time and effort learning Spanish because you work in an area that is primarily Spanish speaking only to find out you are speaking to the Mexican equivalent of Festus Haggen. That is much of Southern California, especially the low desert areas.

It's rampant all over. It kills me to hear people speaking the Border Spanish. It's this horrible mixture of English and Spanish that has developed to the point that it's becoming it's own language.

It's really painful to listen to. I speak Portuguese because I lived in Brazil for a bit... so maybe I hear it more than others?

Glenn, you're totally right, though... I'll bet many of them are also illiterate in Spanish.

If it's a Garden Grove based company, my guess is that the email was written by an Asian immigrant.

My reaction, exactly. And he claimed to be a GG escrow co.

I think this was definitely written by someone for whom English is a second language. But, poor grammar aside, the fees didn't catch my interest at all.

I also got this e-mail

It is from Garden Escrow out of Temple, CA. They are legitimate. Here is their website. www.gardenescrow.com. Check it out.

By the way, I answered all their questions and stated my fees.

Re: I also got this e-mail

I did too, Jan. As my fees are well above their suggested fees, I don't expect to hear from them. Further, I let them know I'm strictly a mobile notary. Wonder how that will go over with them ... ?

I got it too, the fees he mentioned are too low, or too confusing. Not an easy email to read.

Re: I also got this e-mail

I have no issues answering them... but like you two, don't exactly expect to hear from them.

Besides, as Glenn said... all they need to do is look here or (in my case) my website -- my fees are clearly listed there, too. It usually scares 'em off... but that's okay by me. I highly prefer general notary work anyway, and will only take the loan work from companies who treat me like a professional.
