Background checks

1st, I have no problems with background checks, I encourage them.
But, at my pack and ship store I was handed a pre-paid overnight envelope of documnets to Wells Fargo Mortgage. Ask the person if this was the application of the final signed papers for his re-finance. It was the final papers sign byand notarized by notary was is not a NSA.
Tell me again why we need background checks. LOL

I'm sorry but I can't follow this post. It was loc docs notarized by a notary public? I don't see the problem. What am I missing here?

We don't. That's notary myth #1.

Exactly! Besides, Wells Fargo packages have very few docs to notarize. There's no reason any competent notary couldn't take care of it. Getting everything else signed right may be a different story, but apparently they're getting by just fine with many just by turning them loose on the borrowers, or using flags or highlighting.

As much as we may not like it, that's the reality. Of course, the title co documents may be another story all together! Most of us have probably seen the pile of tc documents that they mindless throw into every package, without filling anything in, whether or not they apply, with 10-20 notarizations requested. (And, of course, those of us in California at least, need to change the wording on every one.) The upside of that is that is could be a reason for them to hire a qualified NSA! Wink [Or not...]

My point, If we as NSAs need to have a background check, why is Wells Fargo sending the borrower the docs to find any Notary to do the notroizatrion. What is the worth of the federal GLB rules that we NSAs who handle documents with sensitive info need to prove (background check) we are trustworthyness if any "Tom or Jane" notary can do this.

It's been said on here in the past that there really isn't anything in the "GLB rules" that directly addresses the need for notaries to have a background check. Additionally, the law was passed towards the end of the 90s, but it was only a few years ago that a certain organization decided to use it as a means to gen up sales for another product they decided to offer.

When I started doing this, no one ever mentioned background checks. In fact, there was no mention of it until the market started slowing down. So the whole idea of a "need" for a BGC is artificial, imo. I'm not saying it isn't a good idea, but I like the way California handles it: it's a prerequisite to getting your notary commission. In fact, that BGC is probably more in depth than what is required by some hiring parties, but some of them still want us to pay for a different one. It just doesn't make much sense to me.
