It's a California thing. If someone gets a traffic ticket, they can take a traffic school course to keep it off their record and to keep their insurance from going up. Some of the classes are on-line, but they have to take a test. And since they're not in an actual classroom when they do so, they have to complete it in front of a notary who also acts as "proctor" and then notarizes their statement about having met their obligations.

The amount of time involved varies from school to school and from person to person but generally doesn't take very long. (It's usually 30 questions or less.) If they're coming to me so I'm not charging a travel fee, I may charge them the equivalent of another signature to sit there and watch. I've seldom had anyone have a problem with that.

Tickets don't go "bye-bye" here anymore.

In CA if you get a ticket, you must pay it first - regardless. You can still challenge it and if you win you will get a refund sent after 8 weeks. You can take traffic school only to keep ticket points off of your driving record but you still must pay it, no matter what. Used to be if you went to traffic school, ticket stayed off record AND you didn't have to pay it. Those were the olden days.

And it's steep too! $517.00 for not making a complete stop before a right-hand turn. GEEZ!
