Renewing commission.

I took the CA notary exam on Saturday nine months ahead of time. I didn't want to take a chance on time since the test results are good for a year. There were 53 people taking the exam in my area. They offer the exam rarely these days. I had the choice of April or June. It was a lot different many years ago. Anyway, I know I did well. They give you 50 minutes and it took me 15, but I've been a Notary for seven years. It would have been difficult for the first timers.

Our duties are really quite simple. What makes it difficult for first timers is that they already have it set in their mind that all we have to do is match signatures to driver licenses, and they don't understand why they need to know the difference between an ack. and a jurat, etc. I wish we had stricter education requirements here in Florida, but our class is online with no exam and obviously there are many notaries who fly through it without even reading it.

My commission expires in one year, I'll probably renew but not sure if I should do it the end of this year (holiday season and all that) or early next year. I might even change careers, I always liked the idea of driving a shuttle bus at the airport. The pay is very low but the potential for tips for the person with the right disposition and understands travel ins and out are unlimited! IMO

My commission expired January 2010. I took the class and exam June 2009 -- all through NotRot. Everything went fine but still had to wait 'til January for actual commission to be sent to me.

Insofar as working at airport: took my Mom to Oakland airport yesterday for her return home to Arizona. She requires wheelchair assistance at her age. If you are able to walk all day, I'd say wheeling people to and from their departure/arrival gates is the way to go. I asked someone there for change and he pulled out a GREAT BIG wad of cash in all denominations just from tips!! And, that was at noon. Also, keep in mind that shuttle bus drivers also load and unload luggage. Just a thought ....

Yep. I take a wheelchair to the gate every time because of my artificial knees. I just can't run that fast any more. I tip $5. It's a great service.
BTW, Just because he said it was from that day's tips, may not be true.
Where in AZ does your mom live?

the luggage thing would be my exercise...those people assisting passengers are airport workers, I don't want someone telling me which terminal to work. I would like to be independent or drive a hotel shuttle bus.
