newbie!!

Hi all!
I have been a notary since 2007 but am new to the signing agent game and was wondering how do you go about getting your first signing? Can I just sign up with different companies? I have seen serval that require you to have a certain about of signings before they will accept you. Is that the norm? Are there any companies that I should focus on as a newbie?

And be sure to use the search button here for companies...

BEFORE you decide to "sign up" with them or take a job.

You'll thank us later.

The fact that you declared yourself a newbie will probably end up in with you getting lots of fabulous phone calls offering work for $50-$65. Stay away from those guys. Seriously.

This thread will answer almost any question you may have. For further questions (I think they all have been answered at one time or another) use the Orange Search button. Only after you have done a search should you ask here. Read a lot; get familiar with the forum and how it works. Go to Signing Central and read about the companies before you sign up.

When or if someone calls for you to do work, accept the job on your terms, which means at the pay you determine will be profitable for you to do the job. Then, come here and search here for postings about that company. If they (postings) are negative, don't think that your experience with them will be different, that you are the exception.

You are not the exception, unless you live in the boonies with not many signing agents in your neck of the woods. You do not live in such an area, not by a long shot. If you take an assignment and find out that they are a crap company, don't be afraid to call them back and give the job back. You will save yourself a lot of grief. Again, you are not an exception.

Please, do not think I am being rude, snide, snippy or any other adjective you could possibly apply. I have always felt that there is enough work for everyone, but unfortunately, the time has come when there is not enough work. Even so, I would rather have sharp, keen competition than a stupid idiot that is sloppy and not thinking properly.

Many of our peers here are sharp, keen competition. They write of ways to better this profession and keep everyone on their toes so that we all stand out and apart from the run-of-the-mill individual. Some exceptional people play and work here on this forum - if you read enough you will begin to sort through who really knows and who thinks they know.

It is all about desire. Do you have the desire to excel? Do you have the desire to turn NO to Possibly and eventually YES? Are you thick skinned? Do you have a business plan? Do you know where you want to be in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? How hungry are you? Are you used to working for others or for yourself? Do you know the difference?

I'll stop for now. If I didn't care, I would keep my fingers still; everything has been stated respectfully.

You have some very experienced and knowledgeable notaries in Florida. I would strongly suggest listening to any pearls of wisdom from them. Wink
