Don't end up without a chair!
Remember Musical Chairs? When the music stops, someone will end up without a chair. It is already happening. The music is dying. Too many notaries are ending up without a chair. Signing Services are feeling the crunch and don't have the funds to pay notaries. Some notaries are leaving the field as well as some SS, leaving notaries without a chair. It is safer to work for Title companies because then you will have more of a guarantee of being paid. Which notary will be left without a chair? Will it be you?

Signing Services may be feeling the crunch, but they should have the funds to pay notaries, unless they are not being paid by the title company.

Hang in there if you can
Life is like a rollercoaster. It wouldn't be real if it didn't have its ups and downs.

I love roller coasters! I'm coming to Sandusky Ohio this May with my daughter so we can ride 'em all again!

In my experience, SS ARE being paid by Title. As we all know, they claim they're not just to get out of paying the notary.

I have no way to know if an SS is being paid or not...and won't assume that they are lying just to get out of paying the notary. That's a big assumption.

You're assuming that I'm assuming. I don't assume. They TELL me that they didn't get paid. When I check with Title, I find out the truth. In EVERY case, Title has told me the SS got paid and is willing to send me a copy of the check.

should not matter if title co. is paying them or not, your contract is with ss they should pay regardless . If they cant they do not have adequate operating capitol to be in business

That's right. As we all know, in a perfect world they would all have adequate operating capital. Too often that is not the case. I just hope I'm not left without a chair, since I have several outstanding invoices.

Whether or not the Title company or the signing service feels the crunch or not, they have the obligation to pay the notary. They hired the notary and should pay whether they get paid or not.

On a semi-related note, don't you hate it when you literally end up without a chair during a closing? As in, borrowers have stacks of junk on their kitched table and chairs, so you literally have to kneel down next to the coffee table for the signing. SO uncomfortable, and awkward!!

Been there quite a few times - or the ottoman as a table. The last time that happened to me, the guy brought out a cutting board from the kitchen which worked pretty well - along with my hard bound Mojo! This could be considered another argument in favor of Bob's idea of keeping a folding table in the car - but I don't think one would fit in my trunk - and I don't think there would have been anywhere inside to set it up. (Bachelor pad, rain...)

Top of thighs and knees for me....
I walk into what could be considered a "shanty" of a home. I've never seen anything like it. It looked basically to be 2 rooms, you step in from a very faulty step into the room with a mattress, a fridge, and just junk all over. There was nowhere to sit and sign and there was NO way I was going to sit on the mattress. So the signer (one gentleman) sat on his mattress and I literally bent down and used my thighs and knees to write in my journal. It killed me to have to place my purse down on the floor or what was left of the wood flooring, just rotted-out wood from my observation. I was waiting for a rat or mouse to scurry in the background or a cockroach to appear somewhere around my feet. I had to bring my mobile copier and I was surprised there was an electrical outlet that worked to hook it up. I placed the copier on some old computer hardware he had by his mattress and proceeded to copy his ID.
This gentleman was a young man in his late 30's. As I walked out of this "home" onto the dirt ground, which should have been a yard in normal circumstances, I thanked the Good Lord for all I was fortunate to have in my life, especially, a decent roof over my head. It was a very humbling experience.
