FAX question
The last two days that I have sent out faxes, I have sometimes received a "poor line condition" report after wards. Is this something on my end, their end, can I fix it? Thanks

If it is only happening sometimes, I probably would not worry about it too much. About 10% of the time, I have to send the fax again and I have had my lines checked out. If it happens a lot, then move your fax to another phone plug to see if that helps. You could also have the phone company come out and check their lines. It could cost, though, if they have to check the lines in your house. When I had issues, the problem was in the box at the street, so there was no charge. If you have no static when you talk on your land line, then your connection is probably ok and the issue is on the other end.

OR--why I wish TC/SS would provide an e-mail address, too
so I can scan & e-mail (& keep a copy, too). Besides, scan/e-mail doesn't tie up my phone line.

Re: Lee, how do I do that?
Lee, how do I scan and email - I have never tried that. My printer is a Brother with scan/Fax/Copy capabilities. Does it need seperate software to be able to scan? Sorry to be so tech-impaired. Thanks, Patti

Re: Lee, how do I do that?
Your device software should be sufficient. When you scan, a screen should pop up on your computer asking what you want to do with your scan (save, email, etc.) and the format (pdf, jpg, etc). Check your instruction book for further details. I have an HP and it works like a charm!

Re: Lee, how do I do that?
Really.... check your printer's manual as they all have their own (weird) way of doing this. But I think it's just better'n sliced bread to be able to do this for many reasons---and you stated one of 'em! With mine, I can 'check it before I send it and so KNOW everything showed up correctly'. And, when they 'lose it', a click resends it. It doesn't get any better than this. I've got an HP and mine works like Carol's... what a Brothers does, I dunno.
Another neat trick (for techidiots like me) about this scan-to-e-mail is that it's a GREAT workaround for converting things to a pdf file...you simply choose to save it as a pdf (tif, bmp... others? are other choices you can make.)

If you call the telephone company to report a trouble (you'll be in a "call tree" it will asked you if you're calling from the number that has trouble on it. If the answer is yes, your telephone will be automatically tested ( while you're on the line and a status will be given to you) and if there is a line trouble, a technician will be dispatched at no charge to you.

There are a bazillion points between you and the recipient where the problem could be. It might not have anything to do with the wiring in your home, i.e. it could be somewhere in your neighborhood, in the lines to your central office or inside the CO itself. James' suggestion of calling and having them test the line live is a great idea.

I unplugged my Magic Jack line and have not had any other problems with poor line condition.

Many thanks to all. As a test I sent my neighbor about 12 pages. He did not get them on the first try. He suggested that I turn the machine off for 15 minutes. I did and then resent them. He got them perfectly that time. I appreciate everyone's advice. I am going to check out the software necessary to do the "scan thing". Great day to everyone!

It will happen again, your line build up capacitance and when you cut you FAX off, you discharged it. That would mean you have something in the area where your fax is plugged in is not properly grounded. How do I know, 32 years....

Re: funny phone quirk
I don't know if this pertains, but last week our phone line in the house went beserk. After calling our provider, this is what they told us. Unplug every phone. Wait 10 minutes. Plug a wired phone in first, check for a dial tone, then do a phone at a time checking each one for a dial tone. The 10 minutes disconnect, they said sends a signal and resets everything with the phone company. Don't know how all this works, but it fixed everything, and we were back up and running. The only bad part was having to move a dresser and chest of drawers to get to the phone jack behind them!
