H1N1 Signing
Went to a loan signing today at a Wells Fargo Bank. When the borrower arrived he announced to me that he has the H1N1 Virus and a 102* fever. He said yesterday he fell down and had a 104* fever. Today he was better with 102*. I called the lender and could you believe they gave me slack for not doing the signing. I even asked the notary at the bank what he would do and he said tell the guy to go home.
I sent Wells Fargo an invoice for my printing and trip fee, but haven't heard anything back. Have you ever had an experience like this one?

It's your business and your life.
You call the shots (no pun intended) on whom you'll work with and whom you won't.

That is why a notary always carries a surgical mask in it's briefcase (just kidding) ... I never had to go to anyone that had more than a cold or something not to bad but I wouldn't bank on getting paid for the full invoice ... or paid at all.

I don't blame you. I wouldn't have wanted to be exposed to that either.

So what happened? You walked out? Or you canceled the signing? How did this go down that it wasn't signed? Why did you have to call the lender? You were there!! The LO should have, and could have, handled it...you just sit back and notarize when needed - and let borrower keep the pen. The time you spent on the phone stopping the signing you could probably have finished it and had a done deal.
I agree, you'll be lucky to be paid anything at all...and even luckier to get another call from this company.

Have you ever wondered what you have been exposed to
and never told about? Does this mean you will never do any work at a nursing home or hospital? I have a couple of doctors and nurses in the family and as they always say, if you are well and want to catch something, just go to a hospital. That is where the super-viruses hang out.
It is your choice of course to work under these circumstances, but just by the law of averages, you are exposed to the H1N1 while shopping or social situations at least a few times per week. I am out in public all the time, and just by the nature of what other activities I have, am probably exposed to that and a lot of other illnesses. I would have done the signing and have done that and other types of work with sick people.
Eat right, keep fit and don't live your life in fear ......

I do a lot of 24/7 for 2 hospitals here in my small corner of the world and I know the risks but like you said the viruses are everywhere ... especially in a plane if you ask me!

I forgot about planes. ...
That is suppose to be one of the worst .... I guess I didn't think about that because I don't fly anymore.

I wish I could say the same but if I want to go see my folks it is either flying, sailing the Atlantic or swimming the Atlantic LOL ... not much choice eh? But after each trip for some reason I get there with a cold like symptoms and same on the way back!

I just got to the point where I had several unfortunate incidents in Vietnam and a commercial hard landing stateside and survived that, I just felt I have used up my nine lives when it comes to flying, although I did fly to visit my daughter when she lived in Georgia a couple of times back in '02. And It's funny, I got a real bad cold after that last flight.

It's one thing to not know when you've been introduced to bubonic plague and it's quite another to come in it's front door, sit on it's couch and have cookies and tea with it.

Re: Have you ever wondered what you have been exposed to
Well said! I think that was inconsiderate in the extreme for that person to show up knowing they had H1N1, after all that has been in the news about it. As to whether or not to stay, that is a personal decision that each individual has to make on their own and I don't think it's fair to judge someone else for which ever decision they make. Everyone's circumstances are different and we never know what they're dealing with.
I just think of all the times I've been called to do general notary work for people who were undergoing chemo, for example. (That does a number on your immune system and even a minor infection could be catastrophic.) Or the home I went to where their son had had an organ transplant and was on anti-rejection drugs that weakened his immune system. Getting exposed to H1N1, then visiting someone like that could cost them their life. There could have been someone at that bank who lives with someone in a similar situation. Some people just don't think... or at least they just don't think about anyone but themselves.

Re: Have you ever wondered what you have been exposed to
Very well put - my husband has a suppressed immune system from a kidney transplant he had in 2000 and all the anti-rejection meds he is on and I would have to pass on that closing because even though he has had all his shots you never know. I've seen him with the virus and it has put him in the hospital for days unlike you and I just deal with it. I do carry a mask with me because he is now on dialysis again and still trying to keep the pancreas he got with the first kidney. I just can't take that chance.

I got H1N1 from client last Oct and almost died of it
HTG
The first week I woke up one morning and was surprised I even woke up.
Then I was delighted cuz my darling pug was near me and she was not neglected if I had passed away before friends could rescue her.
First night I came down w/ swine flu I KNEW the titanic was going down. Major hallucinations.
Made 3 phone calls, put folder with Will and PoA re Health Care in described dominate place, then fell into bed. (Only a few steps from passing out while in phone chair.)
3rd day I was hallucinating. Again. Still. I watched my phone being covered with BBQ sauce I meant to pour over stew bowl.
OK fine. I spent $30 on a new phone. 2 ppl in my county died. Clinic told me I had the longest runnest fight on record: 3.5 months. Thank you, I said. At least I am this side of dirt. OK fine.
I'm happy I am this side of dirt.
Ppl who hate me disagree. Dunno why. Don't care.
Peaches and I are still happy dancing all over dog parks here.
Still doing Happy Dances with pug in front yard, LauraV

Re: I got H1N1 from client last Oct and almost died of it
First of all (cawest/PA) thank you for your sincere reply. I'd like to address some of the other posts. I was hired by Worldwide Settlements. The papers once you dig deep say Wells Fargo. The Wells Fargo that I went to, had no idea I was even showing up. They had nothing to do with the signing. I did ask their notary on staff what I should do and he told me to tell the man to go home and get better, that we would reschedule.
To those who say they would have just gone ahead and done it. Hmm. Easter is right around the corner. When all of my family is coming, I'd be sick in bed feeling like I would want to be run over by a Mack truck.
Loan signings are a thing of my past. Haven't done one in 2 years due to unsavory business practices of signing companies, loan officers etc. 5 big jobs down the tube with no pay. So when a bank called, I decided well it's been awhile so why don't I get my feet wet again.
I am in hospitals, nursing homes jails all day long. I wouldn't dare risk the sweet old people I work with to possibly give them a sickness that would end their life or mine.
So in the end, all I wasted was an hour of my time, some paper and some toner. Big whoop.

See Laura's first-hand account. Borrower was, in all
liklihood, not fit to sign - it's a brutal flu.
So, through no fault of your own, you showed in good faith, and good health, the postponement was just common sense.
Imagine saying in a court of law that you willingly came into close proximity - a papers' distance away - knowing the signer was suffering with the H1N1 Flu. Nope.
If they compensate, I'll be surprised. If they don't, I'll be confirmed.

Re: See Laura's first-hand account. Borrower was, in all
My son and I had it in the fall and it was brutal. I only suffered for about 10-12 days. I had to cancel 3-4 loans the 2nd day that I came down with it. We had fevers for days on end. I know that I hallucinated for a couple of days straight. After my 4 1/2 year old son had it for about 6 days....he could not walk for 3 days after that. We took him to 2 Dr.s so they could make sure that his circulation was OK and that his legs were responding; but he could not use them to stand or walk on. In his words "they are too wiggly, mama". It was scary and a bad experience. I am glad though that we can move past it....after having it and knowing that we wont get it again and if we do it will not be severe.
This person should have never been out in the general public!!! I believe that my son contracted it at school....several kids were wipped out for those couple of weeks.

Wow! I've heard that drs. quarantine their patients with
H1N1 to their homes. I guess this guy didn't care if he spread it. I don't blame you for getting out of there.

I have often thought that people who are sick, but still show up to something they think is important to "them" are actually being rude! What nerve. Especially with something as contagious as H1N1. Man, hope you weren't around him long enough to have gotten ill. You probably have not heard back from the Title company because they are all at home sick with the flue!
