Hand held scanners

I saw them at BB&B today. Anybody use them at the table to copy borrowers' id?

It's like a wand. You run it over the item to be scanned. I am so tired of telling the borrowers that they need a copy of their ID. Then, when I show up, they act like they never heard it before.

Re: Hand held scanners....no

I'd like to know a little more about this scanner and how efficient it is to use.

Month end was a very busy crazy time and I had a signing where SS asked for a copy of ID. Well, I get to the signing and the BO was an older gentleman and didn't have a copy of his ID, nor did he have a copy machine in his home. Truly, I don't think it's the notary's responsibility to obtain the copy, but I have no problem telling the BO that a copy is a requirement in order to fund the loan.
This gentleman had trouble getting out of his house, had ALREADY provided a copy of his ID to the lender and THEY still wanted a copy. So...today, Lender calls and asks me "if I can get the copy"......I don't believe it's my responsibility to obtain it, but I call him back and ask him to obtain a copy and fax that ID to me. He tries to fax to me so I could fax it off the the lender and had trouble with the inputting the number. So.....being "just the notary" I did my civic duty to help an 84 year old and went to his house to pick up the copy.
All this to say...if this is a $100 item and reliable and efficient, it would be worth it to pick one up. Did Lender/SS give me extra trip fee.....nope...but I know I did the borrower a favor and helped him out. We routinely go above and beyond. You bet I'd pay $100 for this scanner.

that sounds cool but I wonder if it's worth the investment. 95% of the time borrowers have that info for me or have scanner/copiers.

Karla/WA that was very nice of you to go above and

beyond....but the reality is it is not our responsibility at all to make sure that this is done. I understand in your specific situation of the man being older and you going out of your way....I have went out of my way many times too. However, I draw the line at some things and this is one of them. I ask and either they have or they do not have. Past that....I am not the one making the bucks it is, ultimately, the lenders/ loan officers responsibility to obtain this information. I will not be going out of my way to buy a scanner...get it out...hook it up to my computer and download from it. That alone would take an additional 10 minutes per signing....and my profitability has already been squeezed enough.

I would say that it is a 50/50 chance that borrowers have it ready or can make a copy at home. JMO

Hi all, I have found two scanners that work well and have used them both. After chasing around late night to find a copy machine more than once, I carry one of these. One is a TravelScan 660 from Ambir Technology. It requires a computer (I use a netbook) but is USB powered. When my netbook battery went bad, I found Pandigital Photolink one-touch scanner that also works well. It requires a 110 outlet, but scans to a SD card. I agree that is should not be our responsibility to get copies, but since so many LO's don't seem to bother, we are sometimes stuck with it.

I just use my digital camera, I have a portable doc scanner

that is part of my portable printer but a digital camera is also a Twain compatible device and I can fax or convert to pdf on my computer immediately from my camera.

Re: I just use my digital camera, I have a portable doc scanner

I find that using the digital camera works very well - you just have to make sure you are using the macro setting (the little flower icon). However, I find that I don't use it too often anymore - almost always the borrower has either already made the copy for me or they make it while I'm there (despite my asking them to do it ahead of time and have it ready for me to put in the package).

Re: I just use my digital camera, I have a portable doc scanner

I used to keep an older digital camera in my bag but I've discovered that my cell phone takes better pictures of ID's then my camera and I always have my cell with me, so that's what I've been using.

Re: I have a little printer I got for $45.00

I do have a converter in my car. But if that was not the case I would just take my copy machine it inside and plug it in. It only weighs about 4.5 lbs. Someone else said that about 80% of the time the borrowers have copy machines. Much cheaper way to go in my book. I use my machine to make other copies then just licenses all the time. I could not live with out my copy machine. I could never get the hang of using a camera. No matter what I did I always got a bad glare off the plastic card.

Me too, OR

Bought a lightweight copier I put in the back of my car for all loan signings...during confirmation call, I inform borrower to have a copy of their ID to send back with the package. In case they forgot to take care of that, my copier is in my car, on standby. I too have a converter but usually just take the copier into the borrower's, plug it in to make copies.

There are some reviews on Amazon.

People mainly have used it for library research. It scans as a jpeg rather than a pdf. It takes AA batteries. I might try it.

Think about the Canon 160 or 170 (portable copiers)

I have one or the other, has handles, weighs just a few pounds, and is convenient to keep in your car.

Better than a hand held is if you have a smart phone (blackberry, iphone etc.) you can take a picture if the id, come home email it to yourself and print it. I usually note the issue date, exp date and dob just in case it comes out to light. I have been doing this for years and have never had a problem. Try this on your own id to see how it comes out.

I use an IRIS Scanner (portable) about $150...works fine...

scans id's, business cards, and documents. Hooks up to your laptop with USB cord and it came with software...no problem.

All I see are IRIS sheet fed scanners. How would you scan an ID with that?
