NREIS on Signing Central
Notwithstanding the 28 one- and two-star ratings for them this year, the 24 four- and five-star ratings in 2007 and 2008 was the reason for their overall current average of three-stars. A good example of the problem of not using weighted averages. Ouch!

Then why even have stars?
My point in this case, the average is absolutely useless.

Re: Then why even have stars?
IMO the stars lead someone to where they want to go...i.e. I'm looking for companies, I'll ignore 2 stars, check out 3 or higher...
It's now up to me to read those comments to see is the 3 steady or a result of recent very low ratings...It's also important that the person looking believe what they're reading and don't think "I'll be different"..

The stars are pointless and I totally agree with both of you. I go by the comments and there are some more key indicators after that. I will PM/email the poster and ask for more details if necessary. a lot of times there are postings done in error (which doesn't appear to be reversable) or by someone whose" light are on but not at home".
A good company today does not mean a good company tomorrow. IMO

And Let's Be Honest
Sometimes there are 2 star notaries who expect something from nothing. Our rating on NR is based on several things, but not on the quality of our work. I've been the second notary on docs where there are two borrowers in different locations, and my mouth flies open when I see the quality of work that's out there. We expect the best from them....Shouldn't we also give the best?

there is a GOOD reason they only have 3 stars
In reviewing all the 3 star companies in SC. I could only find, a very few companies, I have or would work with again. All the 3 star companies have comments regarding slow pay or low pay issues, sometimes both.

Likewise, I pass up any service with three-stars or less ...
for companies I haven't had a good recent experience with in the past ... without even logging in to see the comments. I doubt I'd learn anything that would change my mind.

I sent Harry an note on this very thing last week but haven't heard anything yet. I believe the average should be based on the last 6 or 9 months only.

Totally agree ... 12 months at most, just like eBay n/m

That makes so much sense..last twelve months, updated every month. That shouldn't be to hard.

I read the comments. We all know the industry has changed, and so has payment issues with many companies. BTW, I view the "star" system similar to that in the travel industry. I wouldn't stay in a 2-star hotel, and a 3-star would be iffy. IMO the system here is much the same. I like "Prosperity's" comment on the same applying to notaries. Some of us are 5-star service providers, some don't even deserve 2 stars. It does work both ways. You can be sure companies keep their own lists.

In that case.....most likely the only five star notaries would be the ones who don't post. Honestly somehow experience would have to factor in somehow. You couldn't start out with five stars for sure. IMO

I'm referring to the level of service we provide, not necessarily a company's rating of me. When I started out, I decided there was Walmart for low prices & Nordstrom's for quality. I choose to provide quality service and have build a solid reputation for it.
