Retirement of Commission
I e-mailed a dear friend today, that announced she was retiring her commission due to health issues. She was in the process of destroying her embosser, seals and packing up her journals to return to the County Clerk. Her commission expired last Saturday.
She was feeling rather melancholy as she shredded the last evidence of everything notarial. I felt bad for her. She loved what she did. For years she served the public with honesty and integrity. There is no gold watch when you finish your commission as a Notary Public.
I sent her a Thank You for serving the public and her years as a Notary Public. She will be 80 years old on the 7th of April. It would be nice if we had a way to recognize notaries after years of service.
Perhaps some enterprising Notary Public could come up with something to recognize these people. Even if it were as simple as a Thank You card to be sent to people when they retire their commission. Any ideas?

Get some friends together and have a party. That will mean more than anything.
I retired from a large corporation after working nearly 40 years for them, and yes, I got a couple of things from the company, but it's the parties thrown by friends and co-workers and their continued friendship that I hold dear, not anything the company gave me.
And of course, my memories of coming back from Vietnam and being called a baby killer for my troubles wasn't pleasant, but we had one hell of a party and still get together every so often and have a good time. It's the people, not the employer. It's also the same for millions of people who are self-employed when they get to a point to retire. We have parties.
So throw her a party and keep in touch ... That's where it's at. Then she can move on.

Thank you Glenn and I do agree. Also, Thank You for your service in Vietnam. Both my brothers served. I understand the friendship part and a party with family, peers and friends.
I was thinking more on the lines of a separate fund, perhaps through NR for retiring notaries. Each notary paying $5 a year towards it. A Thank you, bouquet of flowers and a certificate of recognition could be sent.
My friend was having a hard time parting with her last Certificate of Commission, she felt like it was a badge of honor.
Thank you again for your response.

I did like you Glenn...I got the 'ol watch Camera but I paid for my own retirement party. I rented a micro brewery in Seattle and catered food, had a cigar bar and free beer for my invited guest ( no company involvement). Most of the guys I worked with who retired after me did the same thing, we are all very close still and that was 13 years ago.

JAM, I would contribute to your goal .

Thank you! Perhaps this could be done through Pay Pal. Voluntary for anyone that would want to contribute $5 or less per year. Of course, names would have to be sent of retiring notaries with address. I can't imagine it would be that difficult.
If the fund became big enough, it may also serve other purposes.

It's a lovely idea Joan, but who would manage the funds, who would keep a list of notaries and their retirement dates etc?

but it would cause a nightmare of paperwork, alright.

Re: Retirement of Commission - Lovely idea
I don't know how you feel about this, but maybe you can see who's interested by sending you a PM, and you can give an address. We all can send a card to the designated address and you present them all to her at once. I think she would love to get cards from notaries from all over the US.

Joan:
I, personally, believe Prosperity's idea is the most feasible. Your idea is WONDERFUL. However, it does have its drawbacks.
If you care to either post your friend's name or send it on to me, I would love to send her a Congratulations on Retirement card. Again, I can send it to you to forward or present to her or you can give her address either via PM or forum posting.
Either way, I would be honored to do my little share of thanking her for her service and congratulating her on her retirement.

My card will be in the mail tomorrow. One more suggestion. Maybe you should post this for the next several days. I know some people don't log on everyday and you don't want the message to get lost before you can get the message out.

"Maybe you should post this for the next several days."
Not a good idea to post the same message for several days. Can you imagine the responses?

Your idea was excellent. Don't want people to get overwhelmed with too many postings. I don't think that would be appreciated.
Thank you to all who send a card or e-mail. It is much appreciated!

Joan, your lovely idea to recognize this woman is very commendable. But isn't there some other way to do this? I don't want to be a wet blanket, but you've already posted her age, and now her address on a public forum. Or is this a business address, I hope? If this is a home address, let's all copy it down quick, then see if you can have this message removed.
As a single person, I'd be very unhappy if someone posted my home address on any public (and searchable) forum, even with good intentions. While it could be found if someone wanted to badly enough, I'd rather not make it any easier for them. It's not an issue of paranoia, just a matter of reasonable caution and common sense. jmho
