Things are getting real wierd! Be careful.
I had a call yesterday from someone who said they were a signing service. She offered me $75. I told her 'not interested'. I called her back and I got a voice mail. The message said that I had reached the number and no one was available to take my call. That is usually not what a SS has on their voice mail. It didn't mention a name just the number. I called several times yesterday and got the voice mail. By now I'm suspicious and wonder what is going on. Today, I got a call from someone and she said she needs something notarized and wanted to know what I charge. I asked her what it was she needed notarized. She stuttered and hesitated. I asked her if it was a POA. She said it is loan docs. I asked if it is a full set or just a few pages. I asked how many pages does she need notarized. She hesitated again. I quoted her a price for just one page. She hung up on me. So, that leaves me wondering, who is doing this? I thought that it may be another notary in my area that may have her own agenda for doing it. They may be desperate for business and don't want competition. Any opinions?

Did you try doing a reverse lookup in white pages? Don't think there's anything you can do but ask a lot of questions before giving a price and use the old gut feeling as to whether to continue the conversation.

Undoubtedly another notary in your area trying to find out what you are charging so that she can undercut you IMHO.

I think it's weird
that there's even a story beyond:
"I had a call yesterday from someone who said they were a signing service. She offered me $75. I told her 'not interested'".

Chances are one was checking you out. However if they want to compete and lower their rates chances are they will work *for charity* considering the cist of supplies is going up and gas prices as well.

I agree with CaliNotary
<<<I had a call yesterday from someone who said they were a signing service. She offered me $75. I told her 'not interested'. I called her back and I got a voice mail.>>>
WHY would you waist time and cell minutes calling anyone back when you're "not interested" in their offer?

Re: I agree with CaliNotary
That perplexes me too. Doesn't seem any point in calling someone back when you are not interested in what they are offering.

I agree with the others that said they don't understand why you would call back after refusing the offer - what was the point of doing that?
And the call you got today - was it from the same number, or even from the same area code? You didn't say if SS call was from a local number. If not - if one was LD and the other was local - why would you think the two incidents were related?

I didn't say I thought the 2 incidents were related. I was just stating a fact. No, they were 2 different phone numbers. One number was local. I called the first one back because I was suspicious. My suspicions were correct. I just wanted to be aware of anything going on that I should be aware of. I found the answer. There IS something fishy going on and I smell a rat. Several times lately, someone called for a notarization and stood me up. Ever since then, I've been suspicious.

Maybe when you called back you got another cell phone and your call showed up as a missed call to them. If you didn't leave a message, but your phone number registered, they may have wondered who called them, and were then calling you back to find out who YOU were... I imagine that has happened to most of us at one time or another.
I'm with the rest who are wondering why you would call back someone offering such a low fee. Unless you thought they might still negotiate?
