FYI for notaries who can perform weddings

New Hampshire issues "special marriage licenses" to "individuals authorized in their state of residence to solemnize marriage". The licenses are issued only for particular couples, and you have to provide proof that you are authorized in your state to perform marriages.

So, for example, a Florida, Maine, or S.C. notary could apply to the New Hampshire SOS to receive special authorization to solemnize a marriage in New Hampshire. However, the authorization is only good for one couple at a time.

Not a waste of time

Try searching on Answers.com and see how many notaries are on there asking if they can perform weddings in another state.

think it would only be worth it if a relative or close friend was getting married there and wanted you to solemnize the marriage.

My friend's daughter got married and her step-brother from Nebraska came down and performed the wedding. I am sure he had to get special permission from Florida.

I'll say he needed special permission

Nebraska notaries can't perform marriage ceremonies...how did he pull that off...is he an ordained minister?

Also interesting (off-topic but this raised my eyebrows) - the Nebraska handbook specifically states:

"Mobile Notary/Signing Agent: Advertisements promising that Notaries may earn a large income from providing Mobile Notary/Signing Agent services for loan closings are often misleading the public. Notaries in Nebraska may only charge fees as stated above in Section II Fees."

Wow..

And just for those who may be wondering, he wasn't ordained online - but is the minister of an established church in Nebraska.

Now that holds promise - where do I get one? Can I get it in 3 hours? I want to be a Dr. - Dr. Julie - that sounds good, no?

Dr. Julie.....mmmm!

Wow - I can be Pope for only $13.99? And I don't even have to go through that black smoke/white smoke thing, we can just go right to the "habemus papam" and be done with it... What a concept!

Not quite sure what I'm supposed to do about that German guy who is currently Pope, but I'm sure it will be covered in the instructions...

I was torn between declaring myself "Saint" or "Pope." After reflection, though, I finally decided against both of them.

I didn't want to take the demotion.

Now here is one for you Robert, and I do not know if any other state allows this.
MA allows anyone and I mean anyone to perform a one time marriage ceremony with the proper $license to do so. Neat, huh, Uncle Tom or whoever can marry you and your blushing bride legally.
Just thought you would like to add this to your store of arcane knowledge.
